You Got That Boy?

A few weeks ago, I was interviewed by a Northern Illinois prep sports' writer who was doing an article about youth sports; the good and the bad...so he said. His question for me centered on what cautionary notes I would give to parents of young athletes.

Before I share with you my comments, let me tell you that my answers and expressed opinions are not the result of two college degrees, thirty-nine years teaching/coaching or all the experiences from that journey. My comments to the sports' writer came via a man with but a ninth grade education.

The year was 1954. I was seated at our family's supper table. I was complaining to my parents that I thought my high school baseball coach should have me pitching for the varsity team...not the sophomore team. My father put his fork down and looking directly into face began to speak, "Let me tell you something boy, I never bring my work problems to this dinner table nor does your mother. If you don't like some situation with your baseball or basketball play then I suggest you do something to 'change' the situation. Your mother will have a warm supper for you each night and I'll provide a roof over your head. We'll do those things because we love you no matter what you do in sports."

And now my comments to the scribe: "I would encourage parents to be supportive of their son or daughter's sports play but make sure that they (parents) are encouraging the youngster to take ownership in the commitment made because it is their commitment. Secondly, I would warn parents to be cognizant of the danger in allowing their child to permit sport play to define the kid's self-worth. The young athlete can be the 'star' or a seldom used reserve; the team can win a lot or lose a lot...none of these factors alter self-worth. Don't blame others for your circumstance and enjoy sports' play while you can because one day you must go to work and evidently you'll have problems."

Not a Complaint but an Observation

Getting older is not fun. Okay, let me pause and make this comment: I am thankful for the seventy-six years I have experienced and certainly, I have been richly blessed with health, family and friends. That does not change the fact that getting older is not fun. Understand that...
most of my family members;  grandparents, parents, aunts/uncles and several cousins have died. I find myself on occasion reaching for my telephone thinking (momentarily) that I will call someone only to stop in my tracks as I realize that someone is gone. I attend class reunions to reminisce with fewer friends, those reunions once filled with gaiety are now bitter-sweet.

I look at yard tasks and once matter-of-fact chores that required perhaps a two hour commitment, which now takes five hours due to needed rest-breaks. Some chores and tasks of yesterday are hired out to neighborhood lads. I cannot do those jobs any longer.

My dedication through the years to 'stay fit' with exercise, running and power walking to avoid family tendencies of heart problems may have been beneficial in the short term but now I must pay a different 'Piper,' called 'Arthur,' as in Osteoarthritis. My hips and knees 'bark' at me day and night. My hearing is dependent upon 'AIDS.'

I continue to do sport education consultant work because it makes me 'think' about something other than body aches and what's for dinner. About 120 people take the time to read my daily blog, therefore I pretend that there are folks out there depending on me to state the reasonable and unreasonable.

I must stop now and 'post' these thoughts. Toy Poodle, Yodie is standing in front of my chair, growling and 'raking' his hind leg. He wants me to take him outside and sit on a backyard swing that gets full morning sun...it feels good to his bones...mine TOO!

We Must Hope

Emblematic of Pope Francis' visit to the United States is the (in the moment) rebirth of simple kindness in spirit. The Pope' humbleness shakes one's own self-centered reflections when he often asked others to pray for him and even should one be unfamiliar with prayer, he then requested their good wishes.

This spiritual man with great ease walks as Jesus Christ with simple statements of subtle admonishments as he reminds the powerful lawmaking body (Congress) to 'Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.' Lessons of our youth resonating in our adult years.

Many non-Catholics, as this writer, felt this Pope's all encompassing messages of hope and love. The contagious energy emitted by this 78-year old man is a rejuvenating blessing.

He has now departed our nation. Many have stated that they experienced a sense of love, cooperation and hope in his wake. However, most Americans will unfortunately respond as a group of misbehaving grade school children when a teacher appears in the classroom, for the moment the children come to attention and focused upon the correct behavior and right mission...but how many will truly grow from the lessons?

I notice many American people are quick to fight for their religious beliefs but slow to live by those religious principles.

Spread Offense, My Butt !

My sport-playing and coaching philosophy was simple: When its your turn; give it your all then walk away satisfied. I did that as a player and I did that as a coach. I have avoided second-guessing other coaches, (not withstanding managers of my beloved Cardinals).  I have stayed completely away from my coaching successors.  This said, I have attempted to keep thoughts to myself thus avoiding the mantle of the 'old coach being critical of the current game.'

With the aforementioned in mind, I make no apologies for these observations: Recently, a sport news article suggested that a newly embraced high school football offense, 'the spread' is creating a nightmare for defensive coaches.' I simply don't accept that premise. It appears to me that most sports' offenses benefit from the following: Rules changes, I.e., football protection of quarterback, must keep hands off receivers and dumbing-down tackle techniques for concussion fears. The we have baseball:  baseball lowers the pitcher's mound giving distinct advantage to hitter. The basketball rules manipulators give us the 3-point shot while ignoring 'traveling' for the purpose of giving advantage to the scorer.

Aside from rules changes there is a subliminal message, which has promoted 'softness of play.' Anytime feelings of entitlement gain a foothold, you will notice a loss of intense effort; we are there as a society. Entitlement is common place with youth 'equal play' mentality and parent coddling.

In 1964, my Mason City players would fight one another to pick up a charging foul to impress the coach. My last year coaching (2001) my Decatur players avoided that defensive technique at all expense hoping to block the opponent's shot. I attend high school football games and note more arm-tackling than ever.

As a kid growing up in East St. Louis (1950's), I recall a plethora of sandlot games of (tackle) football, baseball and basketball. Today, I see those blacktop hoop games in inner city neighborhoods but nowhere else. I notice occasional sandlot soccer games but never the tackle football or baseball games.

I am afraid that we have become a society that wishes to over-indulge and take a diet-pill to address our obesity. Likewise, we'd wish to have a coach 'make' us a skilled athletic performer. Years ago, my wife and I purchased a rather expensive piano for our two young girls. We paid for lessons. Our adult girls don't play. They don't play because they did not practice. I'm going to stop here and telephone Kanoski. If that piano teacher is still alive, we might be able to sue her.

A Microcosm of Race Relations; Mine.

Much is said about 'race in America' and much remains stagnat regarding race in America. Let me immediately extend the following disclaimer; I am not an expert on the subject of America's race-relations, however I do qualify to speak on personal race-observations and experiences in East St. Louis, Edwardsville, Jacksonville and Decatur. One community I call my hometown and I coached high school basketball in the other communities all of which were racially mixed.

I have had the anonymous telephone calls and letters accusing me of being a 'N' lover, other callers and communications saying that I was a prejudice-bigoted-ass. I had a malcontent Edwardsville parent constantly stirring racial issues. I had a Jacksonville adult black man ask me, "Do rich white parents offer coaches money to play their kids?" I had black basketball players tell me that all they ever heard in the streets (growing up) was that 'the white coach ain't going to give you a chance.'

The aforementioned tidbits were my coaching realities. Nevertheless, I managed to build trust in every coaching charge in spite of vindictive viciousness, ignorance and sad insecurities.

I regret but one thing. You grow old and lose energy to continue the fight. I enjoyed the journey and will leave the train thankful for the opportunities and all the assistant coaches, players and administrators who were committed to my efforts.

BOO ! Yourself.

We Americans use scare-tactics in simple communications. Someone sends me an email or Facebook note with a post script suggesting I should agree with the message and pass it on if I love Jesus and/or my country. Therefore, failure to follow these do or else instructions places me one step closer to hell. We are stupid with gullibility! Trump lead the 'birther' charge against Obama. Trump also tells everyone that the 'American Dream' is dead. Untrue statements...designed to 'scare.' Carson attacks Muslims reminiscent of Hitler's strategy as he offered Jews in the 'scare-game.'

As I watch the current political debates, I am constantly told that America is on fire or 'going down the toilet.' Every Republican candidate has the same storyline: This Obama guy in these past six-plus years has damn near destroyed our nation. Without question, we are worse off than we were six years ago. This poppycock is simply untrue.

Let's take a comparative look at the question: "Are we better off today than we were seven years ago?"
1. Lowest deficit since 2008
2. Unemployment below 6% from above 10% in 2008... Don't give me that garbage about people no longer looking for work...that bassackwards logic reminds me of the bigot that keeps changing his beliefs to support his prejudice attitude.
3. America is producing more energy and cleaner energy.
4. Nightly American television news is not reporting soldiers' deaths from Iraq or Afghanistan.
5. America has affordable health care, which five previous American Presidents could not accomplish.
6. Peace...this President has not invaded a sovereign nation during his administration.

And besides that...the following has all improved under Obama over the past seven years: GDP growth, Dow Jones, Teen Pregnancy and Chicago Cubs baseball.

Message to all politicians:  Tell me what you plan to do if elected...don't try to scare me with your distorted view of history. Stop shouting 'fire.' It's a lie.

Burning Tears from a Longing Heart

I awoke from a dream one night last week with my eyes burning and tears on my cheeks. I was startled and confused as I attempted to gain my bearings and sift through groggy thoughts trying to make sense of the moment.

It was a dream about my youth and the parts were beginning to fall into order. The time was the mid-1940's. My Dad was serving in our military. Me, my younger brother and Mom were living in the little 'brown' house on the 1610 Kingshighway property owned by my maternal grandparents E.V. & Mary Bennett. There were three homes on that property plus an attached grocery store on the front of one home. E.V. had been a carpenter in his younger days and ended up with his own little revenue driving homestead.

The dream came clearly into light. Mother had just gotten the delivered mail and became so excited. There was a hard-cover small brown envelop. I knew immediately the contents. Inside would be a small record with the voice of my father. Mom's hands were trembling as she carefully opened the envelop and removed the record. She place the record on the player and the scratchy sounds began:
'The Pepsi Cola Company is proud to bring the voice of your service man in the armed forces.' And then I heard my Dad's voice, "Hi, Lou...that's the moment I awakened with those burning tears.

Back then, I prayed that my Daddy would not be killed; that he'd come home. Those prayers were answered. Today, I pray a thankful prayer for those wonderful years shared. I also pray for the safety of those who serve in the Armed Forces today.

I do note that tears of a grown man burn the same as those of a child.

If you're ever near Decatur, stop by for a backyard swing visit...we'll have a Pepsi.

Intelligent Can State Stupid !

Let's begin here: According to the United States Constitution, 'no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust...'

Yesterday, conservative pundit, Rush Limbaugh was using his usual irrational, mean-spirited Republican slanted opinions as defense of Republican Presidential Candidate Ben Carson who stated a few days ago that a Muslim should never be President of the United States.

Does this crap sound familiar? It should. President John F. Kennedy had to address a bunch of bigoted Southern Protestants attempting to convince these prejudice, less than Christlike people, that if elected as the first Roman Catholic President, he would not yield to the Vatican.

Whereas Rush Limbaugh is always excused for his bigotry, Ben Carson should know better. Surely, with all his illustrious formal education, Ben came across those American times when women were not worthy of the vote. He surely read about days gone by when folks of his color was considered as three-quarter human beings. They could not be President because of bigotry nor could they vote.

Actually, when Ben Carson entered the Presidential race and I became aware of his Seventh Day Adventist beliefs, I thought back then that some doofus would make an ignorant-ass negative comment about Carson's faith. I'll be damn, if it's not Carson saying something so idiotic.

We Make The Choice

Yesterday morning approximately 12,000 people attended Decatur, Illinois churches. That's right, about 16% of the 75,000 population worships on Soy City Sunday's. The national average hangs around 22% attendance.

Like Ray Charles sings in the song, 'My World,' "Everybody's got their own opinion and you know I sure got mine.." This church declining phenomenon is NOT caused by some evil secular 'war on Christianity' conspiracy. That's hogwash. Nothing is stopping me from believing, attending or practicing my religion and showing my faith. I can say Merry Christmas in spite of the boogie man hullabaloo promoted by the Fox News people.

Once upon a time in my Methodist Church, we held Sunday School, Sunday Morning Church-worship service and Sunday Evening Services. The women had Womens's Christian Temperance Union meeting on Tuesday nights, Wednesday night was Prayer Meeting and you could bet the local public schools did not schedule activities in conflict. Thursday night was designated as Bible Study. Throughout the month their were several church social activities drawing families back to The Lord's House. It was a family-faith gathering place...no longer.

It was Christians that simply got too busy for 'The Church.' We got more mobile. We began traveling more to be with friends and relatives. We saw the family unit dismantled by divorce. The youth activities calendar became the center of attention. Church attendance slowly lost top rung priority. Christians made God second; just as Christians place Him and their faith on the back burner when things are 'good,' however we drop everything and call upon Him and our faith when trouble visits.

You may take this as a finger-pointing accusation or my personal confession...both would be correct.

GOP needs to dial 911

Republican Presidential Candidate, Donald Trump is catching all kinds of hell for recently allowing a questioner (at a political rally) to state that President Obama is a Muslim and not a legitimate American citizen. Trump did not correct the misconceptions but why would he? If you recall, Trump was one of the most adamant birther advocates.

The bigger issues are: forty-three percent of Republicans believe President Obama is not a Christian even though President Obama confesses Jesus Christ and his own status as a born again Christian. Can anyone imagine their own frustration and anger if they were being judged in this manner regarding their faith and birth rights?

This particular questioner is typical of the kinds of people Donald Trump's rallies attract.  Trump plays to the grim and ugly side of America's society...people who are insecure, angry and hateful bigots. Trump Is not stupid...he knows the make-up and mind-set of his followers.

If I was a Republican anchored in deep legitimate conservative beliefs, I would be frustrated and disgusted with the high-jacking of my political party's integrity and honorable mission by an sick ego-maniac who spews decisive hate rhetoric. It is simple and obvious that the Republican Party badly needs a hero and a leader.

Oh, by the way, it's okay to be a Muslim in America.

It's in the DNA

Aside from the physical aspects in our DNA make no mistake 'goofy' runs in the family. At the CNN sponsored Republican Presidential debate, this question was posed: What woman's face would you wish to replace Alexander Hamilton's face on the ten dollar bill or will it be the face of Andrew Jackson dumped from the twenty dollar bill? Folks, I began listing the American women who are consensus pioneers and undeniable impact leaders in our Nation's great history. The listing exercise became exhausting ! Just the short list is mind-boggling: Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt and Susan B. Anthony.

As the television camera scanned the candidates each gave their choice. As I recall, Rosa Parks' was mentioned a few times while some candidates played the 'middle-of-the-road' politically safe card by naming their wife or mother. This was not the case with Jeb Bush...no sir, this mental giant offered the face of the late former Prime Minister of Great Britain, Margaret Thatcher. His logic is understood. I am sure he has the similar gift of  the Bush family 'strategery.'

Should President Obama offer the name of a non-American woman to put on our twenty dollar bill, the haters would have a field day and should you not believe that then your DNA is suspect...you might be related to the Bush clan.

Truth be Known

I watched the Republican debate last night. Much time was spent discussing illegal immigration. This conversation  usually ends up pointing the blame finger at the 'other' party for not getting immigration reform. The truth is neither party has the desire to be perceived as the bad guys by a large voting block of people. There is nothing to reform. We simply don't enforce laws. It strikes me being all about money and votes.

The biggest government subsides go to American farmers, a rural windfall for Republican voters.
American workers don't like working in hot farm fields. Hispanics know they can get those jobs as well as other undesirable American jobs if they can get to America. May I offer one example of the reduced labor cost profitability for corporations. On two caissons, I visited Frisco, Texas. My host showed me the early morning corner-line up of undocumented immigrants waiting to be picked up and deposited at various construction sites. Those low paid Mexican workers  did much to make the housing market boom in that Texas area. Farmers and corporate America can hire these illegals paying them lower wages for which Americans would not work. That's a financial windfall for farmers and corporate folks...sound Republic voter friendly? On the other hand the  Democrat party believes they hold 'favor' within Hispanic community, therefore why rock the boat.

Both political parties appear to have self-serving reasons to embrace the status quo.

Is that a speck in your eye?

I was watching the mid-day news yesterday and saw where GOP presidential candidate, Donald Trump drew a huge crowd in Dallas, Texas. I've been to the Dallas area several times. Dallas is a nice place to visit unless you happen to be a Democratic President. It does not surprise me that Trump has a lot of support in Dallas; folks throughout the Lone Star State buy into Trump's cowboy gibber-gabber style...'Don't mess with Texas.' Actually, Dallas is a lot like Chicago; both cities find many of its citizens wallowing in self-absorbing and bogus ethnocentric beliefs.

I notice many religious placards at most Republican rallies and I likewise notice many Republican politicians running to the aid of peoples' perceived religious rights when their rights appear under attack. What I find disingenuous is how some of these 'Christians' pick and choose. For example: I wonder how many people at the Dallas-Trump political rally were anti-gay marriage predicated on their religious beliefs but support Trump, a man divorced three times. I'm just saying, Jesus did not 'cotton' to divorce. Too many Christians come only to Jesus in personal troubled times and too many Christians pick and choose Jesus' words to support 'their' personal attitudes or agendas. I have a novel idea my Christian brothers and sisters. Let's stay busy doing two things, which we can all agree that Jesus asks of His true followers: (1) Worship Him and (2) Love one another as He loves us.

Anyway, I headed to the backyard swing with toy poodle Yodie to continue my pondering of the ways-of-the-world. If you're ever passing by Decatur on I-72, feel welcome to stop and swing a spell.

As the Young Say: It Is What It Is !

My Northern Illinois based daughter telephoned yesterday to ask a question. It seems that a high school student attending the same school as two of her children posted a shooting-day threat on Facebook. The student making the threat said the shooting would happen on September 16.  Obviously, the school administration and local law enforcement agencies took the threat seriously and arrested the student. The student told police that no matter him being jailed, he had friends who were on board to carry out the shooting mission.

My daughter's question: "Would you, as a parent, send your two children to school the day of the proposed shooting?"  I laughed and made light saying, "Call the morning of the designated shooting day and tell the attendance officer that you're going to try home-schooling THAT day."

Okay, it's not a funny matter in these times...it's nuts out there! The high school in question has over 3,000 students. Schools across this nation will one day have metal detectors and backpack inspectors every morning and school lock-down during hours. Schools will likely have several police liaison officers on site. All of these needs will cost taxpayers...but it's coming. Just as sports' stadiums, arena venues and airports have these safety measures, schools are close behind.

The American gun control debate is over...it ended when this nation accepted the harsh reality that it will accept twenty-six children being slaughtered at Sandy Hook Elementary School...the NRA won; children lost...there, public schools and parents must debate and figure out how to best protect at each local level.

Interestingly, it was not an illegal immigrant that shot innocent students at Columbine high school or Sandy Hook Elementary. In fact, our (school) mass-shootings have most often been at the hands of home-grown privileged 'white' kids who have grown up in a gun-loving violent culture.

Abba Dabba Do !

I am not Roman Catholic. That said, I have always held the utmost respect for The Catholic Church. These are not empty words, let me give two examples. (1) There is no organized (religion) church that serves the poor and stays the course in the inner-city mission as does the Catholic Church.
(2) There are no religious followers any more disciplined although one might make a good argument for the Muslim faithful.

These days, I Find myself with great appreciation and respect for the current Pope Francis. In my humble opinion, he is a breath of fresh air for the Catholic faith as well as the entire Christian-community. Pope Francis is scheduled to visit the United States beginning in late September. He will speak to our Congress. This means, the United States Congress will have heard from both the leader of the Jewish faith and Catholic faith. (Note: I believe I'll spearhead a movement called, 'Methodists Lives Matter.') Perhaps the only Protestant clergy leader that was acceptable to all Protestants was Billy Graham...I don't anticipate a plea for Mike Huckabee to be the Protestant spokesman, he's busy defending law breaking fools.

While Pope Francis roams our countryside, keep in mind that he has shown a softer side regarding homosexuals and abortion. He pushed for the renewed relationship between the United States and Cuba. He buys into the global warming theory and its impact on our environment, the Pope Also has passionate feelings of support for the poor who seek refuge...the IMMIGRANTS; legal or otherwise. Finally, Pope Francis supports the Iran nuclear deal.

ALL the aforementioned positions fly in the face of every GOP Presidential Candidate. This loud singing, old Methodist boy shall sit back, while the Pope is here and watch the 'quick-dance-steps' by the conservative Republicans, especially those candidates who are Roman Catholic as they gibber-jabber in and around appearing to kiss up to The Pope and the Church while holding favor with the Tea Party haters.

Talkin to the Dog

I took my one and only aptitude test as a freshman at Illinois State in the fall of 1957. Basically, the conclusion suggested I should consider careers that placed me working with the elderly or with the young. Another way of looking at the interpretation is I'm likely not too interested in people twenty years to sixty years old.

At age 76, it would seem as if I'd enjoy having morning coffee with some old cronies, however I don't! On the other hand, my wife keeps telling me that mothers at the mall and other public places don't want me 'talking' to their little kids...somewhat of a sad commentary. I spend much time with my toy poodle, Yodie; works for us.

Hard to Say

One day this past week, a long time friend/teaching colleague tossed out the idea of peoples' favorite 'fat actor.' I could not decide between Andy Devine, the famous western 'sidekick' and Burl Ives who played 'Big Daddy' in 'Cat On a Hot Tin Roof,' in which Ives gave a riveting and passionate speech about 'mendacity.'

This brings me to my thought about 'speech' in and of itself. Again, I have difficulty deciding on my all-time favorite speech...perhaps Dr. King's, 'I Have a Dream...maybe Abe Lincoln's 'Gettysburg Address' and then it could be a dying Lou Gehrig's Yankee Stadium 'Farewell'

Disappearing Dads

Dance is a art form consisting of selected human body movements relating to rhythm and expression. The elements and subsequent benefits are similar to other human body movements found in sports.
Unlike many other sport performances it is noteworthy observing the male seat selection process at childrens' dance recitals versus the NFL game. The prize spectator viewing location at the Bears-Packers game appears to be near the 50-yard line. Walk into any dance recital auditorium where hundreds of young girls are preparing to perform for 31/2 hours and you will notice ever aisle seat is occupied by a male.

As the dance recital performers do their thing there is energetic applause. At the completion of each dance the auditorium lights go dark. When those lights come back on you will observe a few aisle seats are vacated. This subtraction of male bodies from aisle seats continues throughout the dance performances until only a couple of Dads remain in the auditorium for the last dance performance.

Of course all Dads re-appear in the lobby where they oblige smiling mommies who wish to take pictures of little  dancers holding huge flower bouquets. A very interesting 'folkways' phenomenon.

Go For The Throat

Sean Hannity, Fox News commentator, has frequently attacked President Obama on every front and issue possible; that's what pundits do. Hannity always puffs up his chest regarding our country as if he has some 'squatting rights' on patriotism. Hannity's obvious position is simply America does not make mistakes and thus needs not ever apologize. Therefore Hannity is always ready to criticize Obama when the President suggests that we (America) have not always lived up to our ideals.

Recently, Pope Francis apologized for the Roman Catholic Church's crimes against indigenous people. The Pope went so far as to beg for forgiveness for The Church. It will be interesting to see if Sean Hannity, a Catholic, will be supportive of his Catholic Church and faith as he is for his country and thus public attack and criticize Pope Francis.

We Once Made Things

Each Labor Day, I am reminded of my youth (1940-1957) in blue-collar East St. Louis, Illinois a bastion of intensely organized trade unions. Labor Day offered those Union men and women a grand stage on which to demonstrate their solidarity and workers' pride. Much has changed through the years. Perhaps the journey found union leaders over-reaching for benefits thus inflating construction cost. On the other hand just maybe corporate America's profit greed over-reached with business outsourcing. Today's current political wars over organized unions is just another issue that divides our people.

Those yesterday East St. Louis Labor Days kicked off with a morning parade of thousands of union members flanked by decorated floats, kids riding decorated bikes and heavy equipment vehicles winding their way through the East St. Louis city streets ending at the massive Jones' Park. The day long family picnics was the basic theme with sounds of Municipal League baseball games, horseshoes clanking, croquet games. children's' games and a beach style swimming pool. The day long event truly marked the end of summer. Traditionally, the public and Catholic schools opened their doors the next morning. As the Labor Day sun gave way to evening darkness the reality of school day routines entered the mind...a sobering thought.

I'm not sure but I don't believe Americans champion the labor work force as it once did. Most young people seem to avoid physical labor but rather pursue service type jobs.

Holy crap, if Trump builds that wall, we Americans are going to lose our low cost labor force. Our young people are going have to get their hands dirty and God have mercy, they may even sweat.

Hold My Hand; I'm a Stranger in Paradise

I believe one reason that earthly life is not infinite is over time society and its people's behavior becomes so bizarre and strange looking that the elderly are simply out of 'place.' I understand that fashions, folkways and mores change over generations but many recent behaviors seem closely connected to unfamiliar attitudes, which are foreign to me. Let me offer three behaviors now acceptable, which was out of the realm of yesterday's thinking.

Womb-to-Room Mentality: Overtime the public (not parochial) schools have become 'responsible' for child care earlier in the child's life and that includes before and after the ordinarily acceptable school hours. There is no defensible logic to support this parental expectation. Couples should plan families predicated on their ability to take care of children with regards to time and finances. This should NOT be the teachers and tax payers' burden.

Extended Maternity Leave for Dad: Give me a break! A couple has nine months to plan for postnatal care. The birth of a child should not result in a family vacation. Perhaps a three day, Dad-around-the-house period is reasonable, however if the child and Mommy are healthy then Dad needs to go to work...he has a two-fold responsibility: (1) His employer and (2) His growing family. Military men don't get time off for births; why should others?

Peoples' Public Presentation (Attire): I see more public-bared-skin today than once seen at a 1954 burlesque show. Today's partial-nudity is less appealing due to numerous tattoos and piercings. Many Men wear hats in restaurants today...some men have their hair pulled back into a bun. Everywhere everyone is preoccupied with self-absorbed Internet engagement or text messaging. I suspect some people will go through life having never executed a handwritten letter.  Today's clothing attire and folks chosen isolation into self coincides with society's new mantra> Me, Me, Me !

It appears that my generation is surrounded by a new breed; 'amoralist'...people who are indifferent to previous moral and social standards. They are not to blame; I'm just hanging around longer...I am the 'Stranger in Paradise.'

One final illustration. My grandmother would have had a heart attack and our mothers a tizzy-fit had my wife and I not married but simply lived together......
I'll close with that thought.

Smart Choices 'Matter.'

Shall we step back and objectively look at some of the senseless killings in our American streets. Recently, we have witnessed numerous black male deaths at the hands of law men. It would seem fair to state that some were justified killings because the victim was involved in criminal activities and chose to fight police. Some deaths occurred under suspicious circumstances and appeared to result from police wrongdoing. Only a fool would claim that all police officers are free of guilt in their actions and reactions. Equally, you'd be an idiot to defend every black man in police confrontations simply because he is black and there is some desire to jump on that bandwagon.

Let's look briefly at two deaths. Michael Brown (Ferguson, Missouri) a black teenager and white Texas Deputy Sheriff, Darren Goforth. Michael was an 18 year old teen who refused to follow a police officer's command to get out of the street. A verbal confrontation between the youngster and the officer escalated into some physical struggle. The officer shot a killed Michael. The officer was acquitted under an undeniable cloud of suspicion. Demonstrations ensued with great property damage.  On the one year anniversary of the tragic incident more demonstrations and more property damage occurred.

Last week, Texas Deputy Goforth was putting gasoline into his squad car when a 30 year-old black man walked up behind the white 47 year old father of two and shot the officer. The Deputy fell to the ground and the assailant put 14 more bullets into his body. No white people demonstrated and therefore no property damage.
There is no reason to destroy peoples' property and place others in danger with violent night time demonstrations. Those who feel that a demonstration is called for...then organize and execute that demonstration in broad daylight in front of city hall, thus making the point and garnering attention.
Knock off the nighttime 'thug fertile' environmental invitation !

All Lives Matter!

Stupid Supports Stupid

Okay, I promise, I shall let this subject go after this final comment. Previously, I have spoken to this matter of government employee, Kim Davis (A Ky. County Clerk) who refused to issue a marriage license to a gay couple based upon her religious beliefs.

Please follow a Fox News analyst's defense of Clerk Davis:

The Fox person stated that she believed it shameful that the liberals are bringing up Kim Davis' four marriages, three of which ended in divorce thus suggesting Davis is hypocritical. The pundit's logic is, and I paraphrase: 'Kim 'found' Jesus and became a born again Christian AFTER her three divorces.' Readers, I consider myself a born again Christian but I did NOT know that once you confess your sins and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you suddenly posses omnipotent powers to judge others' sinful behavior in a condemning manner.  I will search scriptures and ask my preachers. In the meantime, I shall write a letter to the television Emmy Committee and ask them to consider Fox News in the Comedy (Awards) Category. Those Fox-Folks crack me up.

Spell Hypocrite

I have quoted scripture at times to make a point. I recognize that I attempt to follow Biblical laws and the teachings of Jesus Christ. However, I also must recognize and accept the secular reality that IF we are going to have a truly 'Free America, ' we must abide by the law of the land for the 'good-of-the-order.' That said, we cannot enforce individual religious beliefs (Bible laws) upon a secular Nation, which states people must be free of religious rule.

Rowan County, Kentucky county clerk, Kim Davis does not understand the aforementioned reality. This past June, the United States Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriages were legal under our nation of laws called the Constitution. Therefore Kim, who receives a yearly government pay of approximately $90,000.00 decided not to follow the Court's ruling but refuses to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. She claims to be following Biblical scripture and obeying God.

I find it interesting that Kim apparently did not have any conversations with God regarding not 'divorcing' three of her husbands. She is now married a fourth time. I'm just saying, "Wass up, Kim?"

The Devil May Care

I recall a few years ago, my daughter, who is the mother of seven children, shared with me the following: Her two year old little girl misbehaved and was placed is 'time out.' The resourceful and skilled manipulative child said, "Mommy, can we talk about this?"  This little girl is the youngest and undoubtedly the family 'Princess.'

Not unlike this little pampered child is NFL talented quarterback, Tom Brady. Brady got 'caught' misbehaving and the league's 'parent' (commissioner) Roger Goodell placed the big boy in 'time out.' A four game suspension 'time out.' However, just as my sweet-pretty little granddaughter...sweet smiling media-manipulating Brady got a lawyer and said, "Can we talk about this?"

I find it noticeable that we have become a society of self-absorbed, me-me, ain't my fault folks who wish not to be accountable for anything. We maintain an attitude of don't blame me or those consequences are too harsh.

The modern day philosophy is: All things are negotiable. Therefore, can we expect a Bible printing revision by removing Matthew 5:37 "But let your yes be yes and your no be no. For whatever is more than these is from the evil one."

Believe Your Words

A nearby school district's athletics director recently telephoned and asked me to address his coaching staff, student athletes and athletes' parents. I agreed to do so. He then asked if I gave 'power-point' presentations. I told him no; he seemed fine with the answer.

This issues of 'power-point' speeches is interesting. On the one hand it would seem that if a speaker's presentation had passion and substance he would not need a slide-show. On the other hand, I believe many folks today suffer from attention deficit disorder unable to focus on the spoken word without some visual aid to keep them awake. We have produced a generation of people who simply lack imagination; they need a picture.

I don't know about others but I don't even need to 'see' Dr. Martin Luther King's face to feel the passion in the words, 'I Have a Dream.' I can listen to a recording of Lou Gehrig's Farewell Speech and feel the goose bumps. I believe that the greatest speech ever heard on this earth was Jesus Christ's Sermon On The Mount. I suppose if the Lord gave that message today He'd have to use an overheard projector at least.

What strikes me is that most speeches end with a call to action. Therefore, the speaker needs to scratch the hidden potential to motivate the listening audience. I never needed visual aids to touch THAT nerve. If the day comes when I cannot strike that nerve, I'll stop giving speeches.
Personally, I like speeches that contain a clever beginning, a passionate finish and little time lapse between the two.
