His Darkness Brought Me Light

In my seventy-eight-year journey there has been over twenty-eight thousand sunsets. Oh, one can make the argument about 'cloudy days' but in reality the earth rotated those days and the sun disappeared from our horizon. Let's not knitpic.

I suppose most people become more aware of the beauty of a sunset when that bright glowing ball disappears over the ocean's horizon or behind the magnificent mountain range. I do admit that frequently, while wintering in Florida, my wife and I walk the beach at sundown and capture that moment of day's end on film; I imagine we have scrapbooks documenting many of those times.

A few night's ago, we were at the Gulf's shore  waters at sundown and watched for several minutes the beauty of our Creator's commentary. It was not the only commentary taking place. Behind us we could hear a constant voice broadcasting the detailed-description of this sunset with all kinds of 'object' analogies. The on-going commentary described shapes, colors and accompanying sights. It was non-stop and became irritating.

Finally, the darkened landscape above the distant water's edge signaled to viewers permission to leave. As I turned to head towards our auto, I began searching the nearby people in the attempt to possibly recognize 'that' voice of the 'sunset analyst.' Suddenly, I heard his voice and spotted he and his wife and son. The couple was guiding their 11-12 year son through the maze of parked cars. The boy was blind and I was ashamed of my thoughts!

At that moment, I recalled my court side coach's prayer that I whispered over a thousand times every time the National Anthem was being played. Just before the tip-off of those basketball games, I thanked God for the healthy bodies on that court readied for competition and prayed his comforting grace on those young people who are unable to play such games due to physical or mental compromising maladies.

Folks, my sunset watching is changed forever. Whatever number of sunsets remain in my ride, I will be whispering another prayer when the sun descends.

Some things Change / Some things Remain

Standing in a concession line in a Florida high school gymnasium, I overheard one parent ask another, "Are you pleased with your son's basketball Year?" Follow up remarks between the two gents left little doubt that the conversation carried a more sinister subliminal-solicitation: 'Shall we consider promoting a coaching change?'

I spent 14-years participating in sports, 39-years coaching sports and 26-years speaking at sport education conventions and seminars. My sport perspective also includes endless events as a parent and grandparent. None of this suggests that I am an 'expert' but it does bode well suggesting my sport experiences overshadows that of casual sport observers and parents interested in sports during their off springs' participation.

Parenting attitudes and methods are like other cultural mores; they evolve slowly but make no mistake change comes. Once our television industry wrestled with the idea of 'showing' Lucille Ball's pregnant stomach during filming of the 'I Love Lucy Show.' They decided NOT to show the belly. Today, our television industry is pushing the envelope to show the 'making' of babies. Once upon a time, children were bent on pleasing their parents. Today, we note parents on a mission from hell to please their kids.

I get it: All parents want for their child, health, happiness, success and love. Well, here is a news flash for mom and dad: that health you wish for is but by the grace of God or luck (pick your belief). Happiness and success are intertwined and only happens when a person's work is their passion while they find time to serve others less fortunate. That leaves 'love.' A parent can assure their unconditional love but any other love sought requires risks.

You can fire the coach, you can curse those who reject your child and you can throw money at the child's problems...it only guarantees the child's weakness by stifling growth, independence and accountability. Twenty-five years from now, these two fathers that I overheard questioning the coach will likely be sitting in McDonald's enjoying their senior coffee discussing why they will vote against the 'new school' referendum because their kids are out of school.

Common Sense Ruling

Reflecting on my professional relationship within the Illinois High School Association, I can honesty say it was a wonderfully enlightening experience. I served several years on the Boys' Basketball Advisory Board, a few years on the Athletic Directors' Advisory Board, two-years as the IHSA Boys' Basketball Class AA State Finals' television analyst and two -years as the IHSA National Liaison for Coaching Certification (ASEP). I remain grateful for such terrific opportunities. It was those experiences, which opened speaking engagements throughout Illinois and across the nation. I was blessed, indeed!

Today, I wish I was a member of the Texas High School Athletic Association and in particular, I'd like to be on their Board of Directors...here's why>> According to the Associated Press, Mack Beggs won two wrestling matches in the Texas High School Wrestling State Finals recently. Mack is a 17-year old boy who is transitioning to a girl. You guessed...Mack, the boy taking testosterone during his transitioning to a female has made him too strong to be wrestling girls; so say the girls.

I cannot believe 'this' is a situation. Look, in this nation of freedoms, I believe if you don't wish to live in the body of your birth and have bra preferences over jockstrap preferences or vice-versa that's up to the individual to decide. The Freedoms stop there however! You do not get to change traditional rules of engagement. Aside from that if you take any performance enhancing drugs, i.e. testosterone you can only wrestle bears at the local circus.

Be Careful What You Chase

Several years ago when my wife and I were vacationing in Florida, we attended the dog races. I have never been big on betting at the race tracks; dog or horse races. I will say without reservation that I enjoy watching the magnificent power and poetic movement of Greyhounds and Thoroughbreds in race competition...both are beautiful and fun to watch.

Of course, the big difference between dog and horse races is the jockey motivating the horse and the mechanical rabbit moving along the rail ahead of the dogs beckoning 'catch me if you can.'
I often wondered what would happen if the dogs ever did catch that rabbit. Well, my research disclosed today that on one occasion when the mechanical rabbit broke down, that actually happened...the dogs caught up to the rabbit. Evidently, the dogs became confused, discouraged and depressed and that particular dog pack never raced again.

That story, myth or reality reminds me of today's Republican Party. For six years the GOP has been 'chasing after Obamacare with the intent to catch and kill.' Repeal and replace. The past six years, the US House passed dozens of bills to repeal Obamacare knowing the repeals would not happen. HOWEVER, they could then say to those Tea Party folks, "We are trying; if only we could gain the White House and Congressional majority, we would catch, skin and cook that rabbit.

SURPRISE! Grand Old Party folks, who walk loudly and carry a little stick, you have 'caught the rabbit.' How's that? You got NOTHING? Lost your appetite, cousin?

You've been telling people for six years that you have a better plan, which was an obvious lie. You may, in time, develop a better plan and I hope you do for the sake of the American people.
My point is this: Own your lie, wipe the egg off your face and do something with the damn 'rabbit.'

Let's Punish All Offenders

It would appear to be a natural question, 'Why?' Why do we have 11-million undocumented immigrants in the United States? What pushes them from their homeland and what attracts them to America?

Seemingly the answer is 'Job's.' When I visit people in upscale affluent areas, I notice many lawn maintenance/ landscaping vehicles and several Hispanic laborers. When visiting regions of rapid home-building, (Plano, Texas/Plainfield, Illinois), I notice numerous Hispanic workers. When traveling across the country side near truck farms, it is not unusual to see truck loads of Hispanics being transported to ripened fields.
When speaking in Orlando, Florida, San Diego, California, Braintree, Massachusetts, Appleton, Wisconsin and other cities, I note endless Hispanic hotels employees.

One must wonder if these jobs are undesirable by white (Americans) or has business employers managed to keep the wages so low that whites refuse the work leaving an open door to immigrants.
There was a time, I remember when union laborers showed up at their union halls everyday waiting for a 'call' that gave them a day's work at a decent hourly wage. In recent times we note more and more states 'breaking unions,' i.e. Wisconsin, which benefits corporations while creating a labor force anxiety and so-called 'scab-labor.'

If one steps back and surveys the undocumented situation in the nation, one can certainly see the cause is multifaceted. Perhaps while rounding up the undocumented Mexicans and deporting them, we should arrest those who hired them, paid them cash and was an accomplice in the crime.

A Changing America

You've heard the old adage, "There's Show and there's Go." I interpret that to suggest, there's people and institutions that purport one ideal but their actions contradict the position. The other side of that saying suggests some people and institutions' actions demonstrate their stated mission. Therein, we have 'show' and 'go.'

I cannot help but fear that our United States of America is experiencing slippage, if not failure, living up to our pontificated freedoms and beliefs.

Let's examine one purported ideal pontificated by our Constitution: 1) Freedom of Religion- The majority of Americans claim to be Christian and quickly advance the concept that our nation was founded upon Judea-Christians principles; Yet, The KKK membership doubled during President Obama's administration. Attacks on Jewish Synagogues and properties have increased the past year. While anti-Semitic  activities escalate, we note attacks on the American-Muslims has elevated. Oh, and in this 'Christian' nation, we find 14-to-18 % attendance in Christian Churches on Sunday morning...an all-time low.

Talk is cheap...pointing to the heavens when hitting a home run is phony..It's SHOW. I cannot imagine God favoring one man to triumph over another man, however, I can envision God wanting one man to reach out and love the other man who looks and believes entirely different.

What's going on? Well, one thing that hurts is the constant scare-tactics wrapped in the current President's rhetoric; things he states and things he fails to state. He talks about a need for a wall and anchors that need suggesting Mexico is sending murderers, drug dealers and rapists to our country. Then he fails to denounce the Ku Klux Klan's endorsement. Why? Because THEY are the deplorables in his camp.

This President has recently demonstrated some good leadership 'picks' to his credit. Now, if he would stop with the lies, attacks on our nation's free press, which is essential in a democracy, and distance himself from hate scare tactics, we just might slow the erosion of America's founding ideals.

Like it or Not, I'm Back!

I missed posting a 'rant-blog' yesterday due to a computer issue. Let me confess upfront that this old boy is lost when examining anything that has more 'moving parts' than a watermelon. I must clarify the computer reference by telling you that I stop using a desk top computer years ago. For the past five years, I have had a love-in with my Apple iPad. Well, yesterday morning, I could not get any response from the iPad. I know it was sufficiently charged but nonetheless when I pushed any button, NOTHING.

I was prepared to purchase a new Internet apparatus as I headed off to the Destin, Florida Best Buy.
When I entered the store the lady at the service counter informed me that I would need to make an appointment to speak with a 'Geek.' There you go...those brainy little middle school 'turds' that I used to hit first in a P.E. class dodge-ball game are now getting even with the dumb jocks by making us stand in line before humiliating us with questions about our computers.

One hour and ten minutes later, I returned to Best Buy for my appointment. The 'Geek' asked, "What's your problem?" (Note: I am convinced that this 'machine' is dead and I'll need to purchase another.) I answered, "I cannot get the iPad to turn on and show a screen." I continued when I should have stopped, "I think the power button is broken. Mr. Whiz Kid said,  "No it's not." And with that declaration, he held down both buttons at the same time and walla, I'm back in business. These 'Geeks' should have agents and cheerleaders.

Since the young man saved me the purchase of a new iPad, my wife said she is going back to the Destin Commons Mall to shop. If it ain't a 'nerd' kicking me in the butt it's my wife.

What Next?

My eldest daughter and son-in law are in Honolulu, Hawaii. The son-in law is there on business and made the trip a little getaway mini-vacation for he and his sweetheart. I appreciate his love for our daughter and I am very happy for them.

They are staying at The Ritz-Carlton.  I hope my son-in law gets as good a night's sleep as do folks at those Holiday Inn Expresses. I am not sure if the Ritz-Carlton has that 'free breakfast' buffet but they do overwhelm guests with doting service and catering. If that's not enough this Ritz-Carlton offers a rather unusual amenity according to my daughter. The private bathroom in their room is equipped with a remote control 'Bidet' toilet seat. You can find them on Amazon priced at $1,000.00 per toilet. Now before you believe that's a bit  too much to pay for a crapper, let me explain some features. One can program the seat to height, tilt and angle to personal satisfaction. If that doesn't float your boat, I'll bet this will 'turn you on.'  When you sit down the toilet seat immediately warms and an  oscillating fan kicks into gear. Once your #2-biological need is completed, the user may press a button and have water spray across their booty. Another button engages a blow dryer across your derrière...evidently toilet paper thus becomes optional.

I recall back in 1949, I rode with Grandpa E. V. Bennett to his kinfolks' home-stomping grounds in the country. When it got dark around 8:30PM, we all went to bed because the house had no electricity. Grandpa E.V. told me that if I needed to poop in the middle of the night, I should take a kerosene lantern to the outhouse and use the paper hanging in a box. He said if I just had to pee, I could walk a few feet out the back door and do that job.

And just imagine, 68-years later E.V.'s great granddaughter, Dawn Rene' is doing poo poo on a 'magical tilted-heated-seat-butt-cleaning crapper.'
Just think...online banking, online shopping, smart phones and driverless cars, now we aren't even required to wipe our own ass.
The #1 Property on that Island is a Trump International Hotel. I asked my daughter why they didn't stay there and she said, "We don't speak Russian."

Cry me a River!

President Donald Trump believes the 'leaks' coming out disclosing his administrations' ties with Russia are unfair and "illegal." OMG! This clown, when he was candidate Trump begged his buddy, Putin (Russian President) to 'leak more' about Trump's opponent, Hillary Clinton.  Trump has had Paul Manafort (campaign manager) and Mike Flynn (National Security Advisor) resign from positions due to Russian contacts. More will follow.

It is highly unlikely that we are going to watch 8-years of this administration. The depth of Trump's narcissism has yet been determined, however it appears sufficient enough to swallow him.

The Trump Presidency is more apt to reach its conclusion when President Pence signs a 'pardon?'

Some Thoughts Never Leave

There is a line in the song, "Precious Memories" that goes like this: "Precious father loving mother fly across the lonely years, to old home scenes of my childhood; precious memories appear."
Once in awhile in my personal mid-night hours when sleep is elusive, I will listen to that CD in my office. I close my eyes and allow a flood of those scared memories to float across my mind's eye. The collage of places and faces endlessly connect to recall moments seared forever in my head.

You know, those East St. Louis memories embrace Caseyville Avenue & Kingshighway where my mother's people located. My childhood home at Rosemont and Kingshighway. Of course, there is lower Washington Park where my family attend Grace Methodist Church on Forest Boulevard.
Back then on 56th Street a visitor would find several Roustio families. Special recall of 40th & Waverly connected early teen social, activities and at 10th & Ohio stood proud East Side High. Hail to the Orange & Blue! Joneses Park offered summer swimming, lagoon boat rides and lover's lane walks. Those baseball diamonds were my second home for  ten years. And then there's 43rd street where my girlfriend of seven years lived...she is now my wife of 57-years...do you THINK I just might have a 'precious memory or two"'fly across the lonely years?

Occasionally, I try to sneak into my hometown of East St. Louis to visit old neighborhoods but with each passing year that pilgrimage becomes more problematic. Many of those streets in Washington Park and Rosemont find locals displaying unwelcome body language and stares towards this old grey-headed white guy. I must admit that those moments often anger me but I know better than to take it personally...I just wish some of those locals knew that my story is anchored in 'our streets."

There is but ONE Standard

From the time I was 12-years old until this very moment, now 78, you can do the math, I have struggled in my Christian walk. I find that I can be both a Saint and sinner in my daily behavior. Let me state it another way: 'This side of heaven, I am always going to sin.'

I find lately that my Christianity is being tested more and more by 'other Christians.' I have noticed at times candidate and President Trump has said or postured himself in a non-Christian manner and immediately many of my evangelical friends defend his actions stating, "He (Trump) is new in his Christian walk." James Dobson, evangelical psychologist, and many other Christian leaders claim that Trump should be 'given' MORE grace (latitude) in sin because he is a 'baby Christian.' PLEASE!
We are not talking about learning how to ride a bike. This idiotic logic would mean that we Christians need a 'sin-scale-barometer.' Therefore, we could then factor into our sinful ways some 'degree' of offensiveness towards God's Commandments predicated on our chronological age and length of time marking our surrender to Christ our Savior. People who purport such nonsense are an embarrassment to believers everywhere. There is but ONE standard!

I need forgiveness when I think of the James Dobsons and Franklin Grahams who posture themselves pretentiously and deliver a phoney message. Please pray for me.

PS. I said Franklin not Billy. The elder is my hero.

True to thine own self

I watched a morning magazine-type television program that presented a segment addressing the 'act' of adult men greeting one another with a 'handshake-hug.' Evidently such a topic is worthy of examination in this United States culture. I am certain that long standing (traditional) folkways regarding the 'male species' emotions is being challenged.  Personally, I never saw the expression of feelings as a debatable matter. I was always off-put by people or society governing my emotions...I am who I am and the way I process, feel and express emotions belongs to me. I never cottoned to what 'they' say or 'they' thought.

I suppose many of our behaviors can be traced to those formidable youth years. That said, only my maternal grandmother and mother could be characterized as 'touchy' huggers. My father and grandpa E.V. Bennett were NOT huggers, therefore I always made it a point to hug them upon greetings and I also kissed them on the cheek. I did that act not for them but for me. It satisfied my need to express my respect and honoring love.

I have never had a problem laughing aloud. I've cried when family members died. I've cried when my dogs died. I coached thousands of athletes and lost too many of my boys prematurely; I cried every time.
I still choke up when standing in an arena when a young person sings our National Anthem. Sometimes I must walk away from the television when a St. Jude's youngster is being held in a tearful mother's arms.. I have been known to cry when watching a child hug the casket of his military Daddy. I do not feel less of a male publicly expressing these emotions.  I need not ask my God for forgiveness for expressing these feelings. On the other side of my personality 'coin,' I have been a fierce competitor my entire life and I will attack to protect that which I value. Sometimes that behavior needs forgiveness.

I will continue to allow my feelings come forth...makes me embrace each morning with eagerness and thank my God for letting me embrace the gift of loving emotions. It happened because that God opened my eyes to who I am and my purpose on this earth.

People Get Ready...

These days we hear much political talk about 'vetting.' That process of critical examination and scrutinizing of a government-post nominee. We also hear talk of 'vetting' needed before refugees are admitted to America. Much of the latter issue is driven by terrorism fear but make no mistake a great amount is anchored in religious and ethnic prejudices and the intolerance from many Christians who operate under a phantom scripture suggesting that they are 'in charge' of judging others until Christ's second coming.

Most often the vetting process works as it is designed. Occasionally, somebody slips into a government position who does not belong there and likewise once in awhile bad people slip through our Nation's portals. Reminds me of my surgeon's statement, "Mel, there are no guarantees but there are risks."

This brings me to my ultimate question...but that comes later.

We Christians try to emulate Christ as per His commandments and teachings. Certainly this is a tall order and we experience much 'slippage' but we luck out because He is a forgiving God.
Let's look at just one of His teachings...
                                                Regarding the poor...Regarding refugees...
(Matthew 25:35-40) "For I was hungry and you gave me meat, I was thirsty and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger and ye took me in; Naked and ye clothed me, sick and ye visited me; I was in prison and ye came to me." Then shall the 'righteous' say, "Lord when did we see these things?" And the King said, "Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."

Now here's that question>>If you were arrested (today) and charged with being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?
You better hope so my evangelical friends...we shall ALL be 'vetted' on that critical investigation.
It shall be known as the day of Judgment; the ultimate vetting!

His Behavior Is So Not Military!

I need no one to ever lecture me or remind me of our veterans' service and their families' sacrifices to our Nation. I witnessed first hand my mother and father sitting at a kitchen table with tears in their eyes attempting to digest a military draft notice into World War II. My father was 26-years old with two boys under age five.
I remember the excitement and trembling hands of my mother as she tore open a phonograph record with my Army-dad's voice talking to his wife and boys while training to go overseas to France. That record was compliments of Pepsi Cola...God bless that company.

I knew very well what that 'Gold Star' meant that appeared in too many East St. Louis home windows. I watched my mother's tears roll down her cheeks reading letters from dad. Oh, my God how I recall that evening two and a half years later as we waited in the St. Louis train station for my dad coming home!
As I said, I need no one to tell me to respect and support our vets.

That said, there is unacceptable behavior from 'SOME' military just as there is from some clergy, some teachers, some police, some bankers and in every walk of life. I suspect it is more disgusting when that questionable behavior comes from those who appear cocky and believe they are above wrong doing due to some assigned status. I say bull crap to that posturing and I say bull crap to General Michael Flynn! Flynn was appointed by President Trump to a national security post. In the closing weeks of President Obama's administration, Obama placed sanctions on Russia for meddling in the American election via 'proven hacking.' Before Russian sympathizer Donald Trump was sworn into office, Flynn (evidently) contacted the Russian ambassador to the United States to suggest once Trump was President those sanctions would be lifted. This is according to reliable sources. We will await confirmation.

Meanwhile, Flynn, when asked by Vice President Pence if, in fact he did talk with the Russian ambassador, Flynn denied that he did.

If proven Flynn disregarded an order issued by his commander-in chief, President Obama and then lied to the next commander-in chief's Vice President, he MUST resign. Aside from that Flynn shows disrespect for American veterans not to mention his horrible example of military protocol requiring chain-of-command legacy!

Keeping Up With The Trumps

Donald Trump has been President for the exactly 22-days. I cannot recall one day that President Trump has failed to appear on television either signing executive orders, attending some event or staged propaganda performance or calling out the bad people in his life, which is the "lying media, federal judges (whom he implies are not as smart as high school students), various foreign government officials or department stores (Nordstrom) who dropped his daughter's clothing line."

In 22-days, Donald Trump, business tycoon, casino owner, tax dodger, bankrupting-womanizer, television personality and 'tweet-freak'' has transformed the American Presidency into a "reality show / soap opera." The daily activities and flurry of comments around him parallels the backdrops of 'House Wives of Atlanta' or 'Keeping up with the Kardashians.'

Give the guy credit...his boastful, arrogant and bullying behavior has not been altered by the his Presidential charge but he has, in fact, changed the world wide perceptions of America's President.

Tune in tomorrow--
Will President Trump withdraw his nomination of Judge Gorsuch for the Supreme Court in light of Gorsuch stating that the President's demeaning comments about federal judges is"demoralizing and disheartening?"

Will the President Trump continue to clash with war hero, Senator McCain? Will department store giant, Nordstrom re-instate Trump's daughter's clothing line? Will First Lady Melanie visit her husband in the White House? Will someone in the President's inner circle Google Fredrick Douglas?

Will Trump invite Under Armour CEO, Kevin Plank and NBA star Steph Curry to the White House for a luncheon to discuss Trump either being an asset or an ass. Will President Trump call upon 'Token' Ben to defuse the racial tension after Mitch McConnell silenced Elizabeth Warren from reading Civil Rights' icon, Correta Scott King's letter before the Jeff Session's confirmation hearing for Attorney General and finally, will Trump sign an executive order abolishing the Judicial Branch of Government?

Don't miss the next episode of 'As The White House Turns.'

Glad you asked.

A few nights ago, I found difficulty capturing sleep. A combination of a cranky arthritic hip challenged by excessive walking and meditating on my laundry list of sins caused me to eventually bolt from bed and seek out something on television at 1:00AM.

I slapped a bag of ice against my hip and surfed the television until I found one of those Hollywood icon interviews. The closing question presented was interesting. The interviewer asked the celebrity, "How would you like to be remembered?" I reflected upon that question in a personal context briefly before realizing the following: Why in the world would I give two-hoots what someone thought of me 'after my death' when I didn't care about those opinions 'during my life?'
I wish that not to sound cocky. Look, I was a baseball pitcher for many years and a high school basketball coach for many years. I had to develop that thick-skinned attitude to survive? Let me add this reality: Once the last person who ever knew me dies then 'who' I was has lost all relevance. Ah, but if only I could be guaranteed that perhaps 'one' thing I 'preached' would stand the test of time. I'd be all over that question's answer.

My statement to ALL would be: "Avoid woulda-coulda-shoulda."

This warning is not that difficult to embrace and accomplish. It is a warning that I have given to my children, grandchildren and thousands of people who attended my speaking presentations.

There are two aspects to this charge. First is personal happiness. Pursue the work-career for which you have a passion and find time to serve others along this journey; therein you will find untold joy. YOU are responsible for your own happiness and the happiest people I've ever known follow that recipe.
Second is relationship peace. Whatever it takes of your disposition and behavior to avoid unfinished relationship business with family or friends is paramount and should beg for immediate resolve.

Yes, I prefer that question: "What would you like people to remember that you wanted for them?" No woulda-coulda-shoulda in your journey, especially when the train pulls into to the station.

About 2AM my hip felt much better but dadgumit my reflection on my sins is taking longer and longer.

Lock Your Doors

Life in these United States is bizarre, somewhat crazy. Look, before you say something stupid, i.e. "Love it or Leave it" or accuse me of being unpatriotic just stop. I don't make this statement as some niaive old fart lacking experience or exposure. I'll turn seventy-eight this month. I grew up in anything but a puritanical environment. At a very young age East St. Louis boys knew who ran the vending business, how the taxi cabs took the drunks from the claws of the tavern 'B' Girls to the whore houses, which cigar store ran the numbers game, don't mess with 'Poochie' and if you wanted the best Bar-BQ you had to go to the South End (Nichols) where the 'black' operated open pit served up the best. These bar-bq folks were not going to deliver because your grandparents and parents made some ordinance that those (dark) folks could clean our houses but had to be out of the neighborhood at sundown.
Like Farmer's Insurance, I've seen a thing or two! But this gun loving Tea Party group and Donald Trump's leadership is the most frightening thing I ever could imagine.

This President has no compass monitoring common sense rationale. If anybody disagrees with him on ANYTHING he either attacks them or claims the attack on him is 'fake news.' Let's just take one scenario: Trump has stated on more than one occasion that since Arnold Schwarzenegger replaced him as host on the TV show 'The Apprentice' the ratings have "gone into the toilet." Then when someone points out that his 'rating' polls as President (44%) is the all time lowest for a new President, Trumps says, "that's fake news." This type of behavior is unsettling and borderline delusional.
As a Presidential candidate, Trump showed blatant disrespect for a Hispanic judge. Recently, President Trump, angred over a stay issued against his 'travel ban' called the duly appointed Federal judge who issued the order a "so-called judge." That's the language and attitude of a 'dictator.'

His surrogates are required daily to 'clean up' yesterday's Trump statements and are unapologetic calling their slant 'alternative facts.' Not alternative opinions but facts! Folks that's twilight zone crap and you damn well know it.

Just a few days ago, Fox News person, Bill O'Rielly interviewed Trump and said to Trump that Russian President Vladimir Putin "is a killer." Trump said, "We've got a lot of killers, do you think our country is so innocent?" Putin is NOW demanding an apology from Bill O'Rielly for calling Putin a killer. Now tell me American military Generals from World War II until this moment believed that conversation would ever be precipitated by a Commander-in Chief. The man is a fool with absolutely no clue on how to govern.

Irrefutable Logic because She said so.

Every time I post a story about a comment from my wife, which I find humorous one of our children or one of our nieces will rally to defend whatever my wife may have said...I can count on it. That is either 'unconditional love' or a wake up call to the reality that 'alternative facts' are embraced outside politics.

My wife's ability to turn-the-tables can be both halarious and frustrating...believe me. Here's a recent conversation exchange to offer an example: Saturday, I said to my wife, "Gerry, telephone Cheryl and Tom to inquire if they are still planning to be here (Florida) February 17, for a visit." My wife said, "Okay, I'll call them after church tomorrow." Late Sunday evening, I asked, "Gerry what did Cheryl and Tom say today?" Gerry responded, "I forgot to call them because YOU didn't remind me." Footnote: Wanna guess how many arguments I've won in nearly 57-married years?

Then there was this exchange this past fall. We were having our home's exterior painted and I removed the patio outside speakers from the outside of our sunroom for the painter. When I was replacing the speakers, I used some old wire that I hoped would allow me to place the second speaker around the corner of the sunroom. I said to my wife (nearby), "I don't think I'm going to have enough wire to mount this second speaker where I'd like." My wife's said (matter-of-factly), "Just cut the wire LONGER."

Gerry went about her business bringing in plants and later I found some additional speaker wire that I spliced to the existing wire, which enabled me to put the speakers at the desired location. Later that afternoon, Gerry noted the speaker location and asked, "How'd you do that?" I responded, "I cut the wire longer." She said, "I wish you'd listen to me more often."

Being married to this little girl reminds me of the saying, "Some days your the pigeon and some days your the statue." I shall add the footnote...'Every day you laugh; some days aloud.'

What'd You Say?

She's both Yogi Berra and Gracie Allen rolled into one...that would be my wife of 56-years, Gerry. We were walking on the beach alongside the Gulf shoreline when my wife said, "Look at that beautiful blue cloudless sky, sure is a high-sky." I responded, "Wow, little baseball lingo eh, Gerry, High Sky?"

We walked a little farther and she spoke again, "I'm not sure if the tide is coming-in or going-out; but it's doing one or the other." Say goodnight, Gracie, you're 2-fo-2 Yogi.

You gotta pay attention when she speaks.

A Most Interesting Perspective

These are NOT my words but excerpts from an editorial penned by Pastor Shayne Looper of Lockwood Community Church in Branch County, Michigan. (Following is a paraphrased account)

(America is more sharply divided than ever in my lifetime. It is not just a political divide but also ideological, which has led to compulsive distrust. Neither side respects or listens to the other with whom they disagree. The result is animosity across our country.

Where does 'The Church' fit into to this picture? Ask that question and you'll notice the 'divide' and ideological fault line runs through The Church, also. Brothers and sisters on each side accuse the other with racism, xenophobia, greed, biblical unfaithfulness and an ungodly culture. While evangelicals sided with the GOP the last election the mainline Church called fouled.

So, which should chose? Should The Church side with Republicans or Democrats, the right or the left?

Neither!!!

It is not the Church's job to side with any political party. The Church's allegiance belongs to the kingdom of God. The Church should use political parties to urge justice and peoples' well being.
When you join the Church you are joining a Renaissance not a club. In joining you are acknowledging that things are not right in the world or in self. Church people should be committed to God. They have sworn allegiance to His Kingdom.)

Need More Color in the Scene

The Florida weather has been absolutely beautiful. We've been here one month and the daily highs hover around 70 degrees. This is our fourth winter in the Sunshine State and we feel blessed to have this retirement time.

Miramar Beach is next to Destin. This area has drastically changed over the years. Once upon a time Destin was a bump in the road fishing haven. You still find one of the largest charter boat fishing businesses in the nation but all around & about is a plethora of resort villages. Our two-story cottage-style house is located amongst some 35-similar houses approximately 100 yards from the beach. Our particular cauldesac is a dog-friendly neighborhood. I imagine 80% of the occupants have dogs. Actually, I know the names of more dogs than people. That will come as no surprise to people who know me. I like it that way.

I must point something out and ask the question of you readers, 'WHY?'
I said we've been coming here the past four winters and one thing never changes. There are no black folks here. Okay, I exaggerate. I saw a few black folks working in the Chick-fil-A kitchen and several black teens working at a McDonald's. Oh, our garbage is picked up twice-a-week and I've made aquatainance with one of the two trash collectors; not the white guy who drives the truck but the black man who stands at the back of the truck where he jumps off to pickup the cans. His name is Troy.

I wish somebody would explain this phenomenon. Why are all the 'snowbirds' 'white birds?'

It's like walking into a Donut Shop and discovering they only make glaze donuts. Really?

It's Sacrilegious People

Since Mammy Bennett was in Church every time the doors opened, I once asked grandpa E.V. Bennett 'why he never went to Church.' E.V. took his pipe from his mouth blew a sweet smelling blue smoke into the air and said, "I believe I've heard every sermon ever preached...three times." I have a strong sense that E. V. had a personal relationship with Christ but I'll stop short of any proclamation or judgment, which brings me to my rant. I am weary with so many of my brothers and sisters in Christ who have the notion that until Jesus returns, 'they' are supposed to judge and impose their Christian interpretations upon others. They are a gigantic pain-in-the-Ass. Now that you know how I really feel let me continue...

I deplore people and or organizations that run the name of Jesus up the public flag pole to justify or advance their agenda. It's ridiculous...it's blasphemy. George W. Bush made a foolish comment when he said to a reporter that he 'talked' to his Father in heaven before attacking Iraq. He may have and God bless him if he did but how dare he suggest that God signed off on his action that would kill thousands of people. Then we have people who will get their jollies over a President 'talking to God' before bombing folks turn around and do the shame-shame-finger on some young woman having an abortion...stop with your holier-than-thou-judgment...in the name of Jesus get the plank from your own eye.

Finally, this! While in Florida, my wife and I attend The Destiny Center (non-denominational church) on Saturday evenings, Village Baptist on Sunday morning and Grace Lutheran bible study on Wednesday mornings. This past Wednesday a young first year pastor was substituting for the senior pastor. The young minister was struggling at times and anyone could conclude he was a bit nervous with his assignment. His audience was about 90-snowbirds with bibles in hand and a propensity to pontificate their scripture knowledge. Good for them...praise God not self. At one moment of uncertainty, the young pastor made an analogy of one "not certain" in a situation. At that moment, a woman blurted out, "Kinda like YOU are right now?" My first impulse was to come to the young man's defense immediately. I waited until the close of the class and made my statement: "Young man, your assignment today was a difficult challenge...you took a chance stepping out of a comfort zone, I commend you. I would also tell you that if you continue to take these risks in your ministry, you will grow in God's grace."

E. V. Bennett may have had it right! Rubbing shoulders with some 'followers' is becoming more  challenging than living amongst the so-called non-believers.

My Daddy would say, "That's Bassackwards."

Last evening, my wife and I stood on the beach to watch a beautiful sunset. Several young children were nearby with parents. Perhaps the thought that flashed across my mind is shared by all elderly folks; the mental notation, 'enjoy for the number is dwindling.' Suddenly, perhaps stimulated by nearby young voices I looked at the children standing next to parents. Many were of the age six or seven. That was the age of the 20-Sandy Hook Elementary School children who on December 14, 2012 were slaughtered in Christmas decorated classrooms by a lone gunman. A home grown terrorist. Don't we know that sunsets will never be the same for those families. A brief gun control and mental health debate followed the Sandy Hook massacre in the usual short-lived fashion as it was stymied by 2nd Amendment /NRA fanatics.

Five years later, Americans are debating the travel ban entrance placed on some Muslim peoples. Potential terrorists. Of course, the plethora of terrorist attacks in our country will continue to be carried out by American mental patients wondering the streets (compliments of Ronnie Reagan) who are wielding easily accessible assault guns compliments of the GOP/NRA bedfellows.

Perhaps with Trump's Supreme Court selection, the GOP's evangelical folks can get Roe v. Wade overturned and we can protect these unborn children. After all, there is nothing so precious as kids.
It's political poppycock. A nation of people that would fail to make its lawmakers respond to the Sandy Hook tragedy yet insists on a pro-life stance has lost its way. Shame on us.

I believe I'll take my recording of Lee Greenwood's 'Proud to Be An American' to my next sunset.
