Ain't Good To Fall

Statistics reveal that 1-in-3 people age 65 or older will fall once a year. Those elderly falls happen every 11-seconds. I became a statistic four-weeks ago. I did not share this information immediately with my blog readers for a few reasons:
(1) Just because I am seventy-nine and calloused to many things, I still get embarrassed. (2) Disclosing publicly that I fell ignites too many intense emotions among my advocates and adversaries. (Let me explain: My advocates will worry about my well being while my adversaries will seek details about broken bones and bleeding) and the greatest reason of non-disclosure is  (3) my children will intensify their lectures and making jokes about their aging parents.

Okay about 'The Fall.' My wife and I were sitting on our front porch bench on a sunny late afternoon awaiting the arrival of out of town guests. I was holding eight pound Toy Poodle Yodie in my lap. As our guests pulled into our driveway, I stood up and instead of walking to the center of the porch to descend the steps properly, I chose to stride a longer distance intending to reach the side of the step and descend...I missed my mark, stumbled and began to fall forward towards the sidewalk. Thank God I had presence of mind to turn my body to avoid falling on my puppy. My spine, however was in a twisted position when my195 pound body crashed to the walkway. I recall yelling out, "Oh my back!" That OLD back that has experienced three surgical invasions. I laid there for a moment to allow pain sensors to kick in but to my surprise they were limited. For the next three days, I noticed minor morning stiffness then it began, near debilitating muscular, back and hip pain.

Finally, I followed my wife's advice and got an X-ray, which was negative for bone and compression  fractures. The doctor told me that I likely stretched and tore muscles while awakening some arthritic issues from previous back surgeries. "If you were 29, I'd say you would be back to normal in 7-to-10 days; at your age, you're looking at 7-to-10 weeks," said the doctor. For three plus weeks it has been a  challenge getting in and out of bed, which is problematic for an old man with a prostate the size of a softball. At the end of four weeks, I can now roll over in bed without thought and great caution.

Stop by for a visit and notice our new handrail off the front porch

Changing Rules of Engagement

In recent times, I have noticed that the rules of engagement in professional baseball games and politics has changed in ways that evokes a sense of sadness and regret.

First, Major League Baseball: The 2018 MLB Official Rule Book: (Rule 406)..."No player shall fraternize with fans or sit in the stands while in uniform. Opposing players may NOT fraternize while in uniform.">>>This rule is broken everyday at every major league stadium by every Major League Baseball team. I notice opposing players conversing and laughing with opponents in pre-game warm-ups at every game. I notice hitters talking to catchers frequently. Base runners seem to have conversations with infielders constantly. Rule 406 should be enforced or eliminated. Of course, I believe the strike zone should likewise be enforced but I'll not hold my breath.

One final comment regarding fraternization: Many of the baseball pitchers of yesteryear, i.e. Bob Gibson (St. Louis Cardinals), Don Newcombe (Brooklyn Dodgers) and Nolan Ryan (Texas Rangers) let it be known that they didn't like their teammates to be 'buddy-buddy' with opposing players. As Gibson was once reported  saying, "Those other guys are trying to take food off my family's table.!"

Now, shall we take a look at the current political 'engagement rules?' President Trump's attorney, Rudy Giuliani recently said, "If Trump is impeached the American people will revolt." Revolt by definition means a people rise in rebellion. This is a NOT so subliminal message suggesting violence.
Trump, himself began his presidential campaign rallies with rhetoric that encouraged violence when he said things like, "I'll pay your legal fees if you punch him." Trump also attacks anybody and everybody who dare disagrees with him and he has done so in the most mean-spirited personal manner. He has made Jokes about adversaries' disabilities and personal looks.

With such negative political comments now common in our (governing) discourse, I encourage those reading these remarks to stop and appreciate a message from a dead man as his Memorial Funeral Service approaches. The late American war hero and long time Senator, John McCain will be eulogized at his request by Former Presidents, George W. Bush and Barrack Obama. Please consider McCain's message to the American people in making these events eulogy requests. It is McCain's plea for civility. Bush defeated McCain in a Republican Presidential primary and Obama defeated McCain in a Presidential general election. Not many men are capable of this particular level of dignity and classy behavior. John McCain's last message to Americans is in concert with the manner in which the man lived. A prisoner of war who when given the chance to be set free would not betray his fellow prisoners and thus remained captive with them. A political servant who insisted on governing by 'compromising' with his Democrat adversaries.

Above self, McCain placed Country.

"Very Interesting,"'said Sergeant Schultz.

A dear friend recently sent me an email, which pointed out the rather drastic differences in our lives today (2018) compared to the year 1918. Perhaps you, also have seen that email. All items compared were interesting but a few caught my attention and of course begged a response.

1918---fuel for cars was sold in drug stores.......................2018---sold at grocery stores.
1918---Canada prohibited poor people from entering........2018---today those are 'shithole' countries.
1918---2-out-of-10 adults could not read............................2018---7-out-of-10 adults won't read.

1918---buy pot, heroin & morphine over the counter at the local drugstore
2018---buy pot, heroin & morphine at the corner in front of the local drugstore.

1918---18% of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.
2018---Those domestic workers do not have to be 'out of the neighborhood before dark.'

1918---There were about 230 murders that year in the entire Nation.
2018---There are 240 murders every six days in the United States.

1918---The President was Woodrow Wilson who had been President of Princeton University. President Wilson brought us the League of Nations, the Federal Reserve and the Federal Income Tax.
2018---Our President is Donald Trump who had been President of Trump University who will not show us his income taxes.

Finally, I've lived 42-years longer than the life expectancy for a 1918 man.

And The Beat Goes On

Another American mass shooting this Sunday past. Soon the 'trite' White House expression from President Trump will be rolled out: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims' families." It would be nice for Trump to offer some fresh remarks.

There is an overwhelming preponderance of evidence that since the 9-11 attacks of 2001, over 80% of mass shootings in America have been done by U S citizens...let me repeat...since September 11, 2001, American citizens (not Muslims nor Mexicans) have committed 80% of the mass killings in our nation. That would be our very own home-grown murders, Mr. "We need a wall NOW," Trump.

The President and the Republican Party, which is in power will casually dismiss the killings with mundane sympathy expressions while pointing to mental illness as the reason for these horrifying tragedies.

Absolutely nothing will be done to address this growing social-illness except the pathetic cry from a pretend President to build a wall on the Mexican border and ban people from "shit hole countries."

There is a possibility that President Donald will contrive a devious conspiracy-plot tying the 'Madden NFL-19 Games' to an association with those "SOB NFL kneeling players." We'll have to wait and see; after all Trump's mind and thinking is unique as is any madman's mind.

From the Lips of America's President

Last week, Paul Manafort, former campaign manager for Donald Trump was convicted of eight counts of felony. Manafort joins many other Trump associates who have pleaded guilty, been convicted or indicted, i.e., General Michael Flynn, George Papadopoulos, Rick Gates, 13-Russian nationalists and 12- Russian intelligence officers.

This week, Senator John McCain, a former five (5)-year prisoner of war died of brain cancer. McCain was honored for his military service with the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Silver Medal, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. McCain also served in the United States Congress for over 30-years. All toll, McCain served this country for over sixty-years.

Following are President Trump's personal thoughts about Manafort and McCain:
Manafort: "It is a very sad thing that happened to Paul Manafort (his convictions) he is a good
                          man," stated President Trump.
McCain:   (When asked about McCain's hero status as a five year prisoner of war.) "He's a hero
because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured," said the President of
United States...a tough-talking guy who was the recipient of four (4) college
deferments and one (1) heel bone-Spurs deferment.

It is said that 'words matter' and perhaps it is true, however the absence of words may be equally impacting. That said, Trump's words do not disappoint me but the silence of my congress persons and religious leaders sadden me. "Evil triumphs when good people do nothing." Edmund Burke

Three Cheers for the 'Flippers!'

I've noticed recently in broadcast news the term 'flipping' has become more prevalent in discussions. It appears some folks don't like it when a person in a subordinate position gets caught breaking the law and 'flips' or turns state's witness against the next guy higher on the toetum pole who may be that bigger law breaker. By 'flipping' the person snitching gets a lesser punishment. I don't know about you but to save my butt or protect my family, I'm going to 'flip' on you...take it to the bank. Oh, I'll also bet my last dime when push comes to shove, you tough takin studs will look like a gold medalist gymnast when the walls start closing in.

In my hometown of East St. Louis, which was known to have its share of underground activities, those who turned state's evidence were not called flippers, they were called 'stool pigeons' or 'squealers.' Some of those fellas eventually showed up in the trunk of their Cadillac while others just disappeared.

Let's face reality. If law enforcement is going to be successful in protecting society, they better find 'flippers.'

1963...Mobster Joe Valachi was an informant and the first mobster to confirm publicly an America  Mafia.
1967...Joseph 'The Animal' Bamboza ...a hit man for the Patriarca crime family...Bamboza testified against the family, he 'flipped.'
Joe 'The Ear' Massino squealed on many associates in 2004, and showed the Feds the location of the famous 'Mob Graveyard.'
Salvatore Sammy 'The Bull' Gravano, in 1980, was under boss for John Gotti...Gravano cut a deal with the Feds and testified against Gotti.
In the 60's & 70's, Frank Lucas controlled Manhattan's largest heroine ring. Frank also cut a deal with prosecutors and named corrupt New York police officers who were on the take.

Oh, one more, remember Henry Hill's story? Well instead of me elaborating you can rent the movie 'Goodfellas.' I'll bet it's one of Donald Trump's favorite 'flipper flicks.'

An Excerpt from 'Angels on my Journey.'

The following is one of 59-excerpts from my recently released book, 'Angels on My Journey.'

'Faith And Religion, A Personal Conflict'

I have been under the influence of the Methodist religion for my entire seventy-nine years. I have been in a 'faith' relationship with Jesus Christ since age 12, which is sixty-seven years. I would think that we acknowledge that there is a difference between our religion and our faith. Religion appears to exist to pigeonhole faith into a specific doctrine, which is man's preference. If this was not true would we not have but one religion?

I must admit that I become frustrated and even somewhat irritated and disenchanted with evangelicals who are quick to pander to man's agenda invoking their 'religious' doctrines at the expense of 'faith' beliefs.

I understand that followers of Jesus Christ should witness and testify as the Lord commanded of His disciples when He said, "Go forth and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the names of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit. What becomes problematic for this believer is my observation that organized religion risk contamination of 'faith' when inviting politics into the church.

I shall remain in the Methodist religion so that I might fellowship and grow in 'faith' while offering a voice against adherence to any doctrine, which begs judgment of others. And make no mistake, it IS prevalent.

Life's Longing for Itself

My wife, Gerry and I push ever so nearer our eighth decade in this amazing journey. We are blessed beyond belief. Our fifty-eight years married has revealed three adult children and their truly loving and caring spouses. Those marriages have produced fifteen grandchildren with additional spouses and three great-grandchildren. The latest great grandchild, Ryelan Scott Mitchell was born just this week, August 20, 2018.

I note grandkids busy in the work places and in various professions while others negotiate public school education from the elementary years to the collegiate challenges. Some embrace new births and more make wedding plans...all of which serves to remind us, 'Life Longs For Itself.'

The Saga of Joe Conservative

Authur Unknown...

Joe gets up at 6a.m. and fills his coffee pot with clean water because some tree hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. Joe takes his morning meds, which are safe because some stupid commie liberal fought to insure safety and that the meds work as advertised. His meds are mostly paid for by his employer's medical plan because liberal union workers went on strike years ago for paid medical insurance-Joe now gets it. Joe's morning breakfast of eggs & bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate (GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS) the meat industry.

Joe walks to the mass transit pick up stop breathing fresh air because some wacko liberal fights industries for clean air. Joe saves auto and parking expenses using mass transit because some socialist-liberals staged protest to adopt government provided transportation services.

Joe's job offers good wages, an excellent medical plan, paid holidays and vacation time with retirement benefits because some lazy union liberals fought the battle. If Joe is hurt on the job, he will receive workmans' compensation because some crazy liberal thought guys like Joe should not lose their home if out of work due to injury. When Joe banks his check he can be sure that his money is 'safe' because some godless liberals insisted on government regulations on the banking industry...thanks to Government Regulations Joe's money is protected from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the system before the Great Depression.

Joe takes his family to visit his aging parents over the weekend. Those 'socialist' provided interstate highways, which makes the trip easier these days and Joe has peace of mind knowing his parents have a decent retirement income supplemented by social security...thanks to some nutty-libtards.
Joe listens to talk radio during the drive and finds himself agreeing with the conservative radio host who is pomoting the notion that "those big-government liberals are ruining our lives." Joe agrees as he tells his wife and kids, "I'm a self-made man...I took care of myself, didn't need assistance and others should do the same."

Actually, Joe, here's a fact: Sooner or later, in some way, we are ALL LIBERAL-DEMOCRATS.

Glass-a-Day Keeps Reality Away!

Anybody who seriously examines world history events will note that countries under authoritarian dictatorships will discover several commonalities but perhaps the three most desired traits of a dictator are: 1) destroy 'free press and speech,'  2) control the military and 3) target certain groups as evil and problematic.

Rush Limbaugh (conservative right-wing radio host): "Slavery had its merits. It built the South and streets where safer after dark."

Alex Jones (right-wing radio host and conspiracy theorist): Makes claims that no children were killed at Sandyhook Elementary School. Jones States, "It was all staged."

Kellyanne Conway (Counselor to President Trump): Insists that "facts offered can be discounted by 'alternative' facts."

Rudy 'Train Wreck' Giuliani (personal attorney of President Trump): Rudy recently told Meet the Press television host, Chuck Todd, "Truth 'isn't' Truth."

Donald J. Trump (United States President): Trump recently told an audience of his supporters, "Just remember, what you're seeing and reading is not what's happening...just stick with us."

Okay great-thinkers: Line up, time to pass out the Kool Aid!

Get Up and Get After It!

This past week, my wife, Gerry and I attended our church sponsored Alzheimer's Seminar presented by neuropsychologist, Dr. Lee Hall who practices at Decatur Memorial Hospital. Gerry and I were among some thirty folks, mostly seniors seeking a greater insight into the mysterious diseases of the brain.  We all likely departed the two-hour presentation with the understanding that proper diet and exercises of the mind and body were the most significant things in our control to hold off the potential aging issues of dementia and the dreaded abyss called Alzheimer's.

It would be a gross understatement to say the diagnosis of specific brain maladies is easy to determine. After hearing Dr. Hall's well versed but complicated brain malfunctions explanations it became clearer than ever 'why' the frustration with Alzheimer's.

I did pose one question because I know it haunts my wife and I suspect it's on many people's minds. That question sought the answer to the 'heredity factors' associated with dementia and Alzheimer's. The Doctor's answer dismissed the notion. The disease is not genetic. One factor appeared relevant to me. It seems that a sedentary life style coupled with depression places the elderly in a vulnerable position to develop dementia.

The charge that I took away that evening was: 'Use It Or Lose It.'

Parenting Multi-Tasking

She is the middle child between older brother, Steve and younger sister, Pam. She is 53-years old, married to Shawn O'Keefe. She is the mother of seven children and overseer of two dogs and soon to be three, I'm sure. She is Dawn Rene'.

When she was a young girl at home leaving the house to go somewhere, I often told her, "Look both ways!" I surely hope she is doing just that these days. Let me elaborate. One week ago, Dawn traveled three hours from Barrington, Illinois to Decatur with three of her four girls, (Kaitlyn, Alexa & Ashlyn),  a boyfriend of one of the girls (Gio), two of her three sons, (Colin and Connor) and two dogs to celebrate her mother's birthday with sister Pam, brother in-law, Tim, nephew Caleb and his fiancé, Morgan, niece, Erica and me.

After dinner, Dawn left Decatur for a two and a half hour drive to Polo, Illinois in anticipation that the 'contractions' being experienced by her 29-year old daughter, Lindsay was signaling the birth of Dawn's first grand child. Didn't happen on August 11, 12 or 13 or 14, so Dawn packed her daughter, Kaitlyn's things in the SUV on August 15 and headed out on a five hour trip to Bloomington, Indiana where Kaitlyn will begin her freshman year and brother, Connor will start his junior campaign.

Of course, Dawn had to rush back to Northern Illinois on a five hour trek eager for Lindsay's delivery but in the meantime, she must on August 17, her mom's actual date of birth,  Dawn posted on Facebook a very nice salute to her mother wishing her a Happy 79th  Birthday. Dawn's busy that day> her seven year old second grade daughter, Ashlyn has a 'Meet Your Teacher' event at 3PM followed by high school freshman daughter, Alexa's first game at which to cheer lead....not to forget that pregnant daughter Lindsay's approaching time!

Knowing just how busy my daughter Dawn is, I did what any good father would do: I commented on her Facebook page that Dawn made a mistake...her mother is ONLY 78 years old not 79. When Dawn gets a breather she'll likely telephone and thank me for pointing out her error! Cannot believe my wife missed that mistake.

A Grand Enterprise

I walked onto Illinois State Normal University's campus as a freshman in the fall of 1957. The university was commemorating its 100th Anniversary. ISNU had long been viewed as one of the premier teacher preparation institutions in the Midwest. Long time university history professor, Dr. Helen Marshall had completed her writing and published a book entitled, 'The Grandest of Enterprises,' which chronicled the first 100 year history of  Illinois State Normal University.

I bought into Dr. Marshall's premise and became one instrument of Education for thirty-nine professional years. I have no regrets and would do it all over in a heart beat. I truly believe teaching to be the 'grandest of enterprises.' The surgical doctor who saves a life this day had his nurturing in education directed by teachers and professors as did most people walking this nation. I rest my case!

This fall I count five family members who will welcome students to classrooms. Son, Steve, daughter in-law Kathy, daughter Pam and granddaughters, Amanda and Lindsay will have opportunities to positively impact young lives. For my family of teachers and the millions of others who "Gladly Learn and Gladly Teach," I shall lift you in daily prayer asking for patience, energy, support and a steadfast spirit. May God bless all who wade the waters of the 'Grandest of Enterprises.'

Changes

Out of habit, I normally sit in a pew near the back of church. I don't know why, just do. A couple of Sundays past, I noticed a greater number of bluish-grey-headed women as opposed to fewer greying-bald-headed gents. I understand that the female life expectancy is about seven years longer than their male (generation) contemporaries but examining the 'why,' I believe I have a valid theory.

I think women simply handle life's stages better than men and therefore avoid that state of mental or emotional tensions resulting from that male cut-throat, competive, demanding work place. Now before you ladies get hot under the necklace, I will explain. I am not suggesting men have greater demands of time and energy. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the WWII years when many women assumed men's factory jobs as they filled a void. However, that was hardly a womens' 'movement.'

I'm a seventy-nine year old grey-headed old man. The oldsters in church are my contemporaries. We were born in the 1930's and early 1940's. During much of the first half of the 1900's women were happy being housewives...stay at home mothers. Believe me, I understand that's not an easy job. I've attempted taking care of household duties those times my wife was ill or recovering from surgeries...it ain't easy. However, it's not a vicious cut-throat world...it's the individual woman's defined job description.

Once retirement years came oldsters of my generation, I noted women more capable of shifting gears. They join the 'Red Hats' or other organizations, volunteer at church and hospitals or do pleasurable relaxing things i.e., antiquing. Men still get out of bed too early and look for projects.

The 1960's feminist movement across the USA brought changes to the status quo of the day and continue to impact today. Women compete with men for many of the jobs once held only by men and rightfully demand equal pay for the same work. Socially, I've noticed some used to be well-defined behavior pattern lines between the sexes become a bit blurred. Today many women dress like men, curse like men, smoke in public and frequent establishments which were once taboo.

I believe the coming generation of old timers will begin noticing equal gender numbers at Sunday morning worship services. HOWEVER, there's another change happening>>in the decade of 1950, fifty percent of professed Christians attended church regularly. Today, that number fluctuates between 14%-to-18%. It won't take long for the collection plates to be passed.

A Serpent's Tongue.

Occasionally, I have one of those nights when sleep is elusive...I couldn't catch it 'for the life of me' last night. There's an interesting 'idiom:' 'For the life of me.' I suppose it means no matter the degree of effort...it ain't happening!

Finally, I got out of bed and recorded music from old LP's and vinyl 45's. While 'burning' music onto CD's I began thinking of sayings I heard from family members as a young child. My dad was good to say, "Hey boy, straighten up and fly right." (Meaning: If you know what's good for you you'll start behaving properly.)  Dads frequent saying to his teen son was "Boy, while out on the streets don't let your mouth overload your ass." (In other words>Don't write a check you can't cash). My maternal grandmother, Mammy Bennett often said, "If you can't say something good about a person then say nothing." My, my, we sure could use a big dose of that in today's social climate. We are all guilty of criticism and ugly comments.

I notice that a good many folks today,  'talk out of both sides of their mouth' and 'evil prevails because good men do nothing.' I especially notice these latter two comments in politics. If you simply review Rudy Giuliani's defensive statements on behalf of his client, Donald Trump you be able to sum things up> "He didn't say that but if he did it's not a lie." "He is not guilty of collusion but if he colluded it's not a crime."  In July, Rudy said that Attorney Michael Cohen was a good man with an honorable reputation. One month later, Rudy said that Cohen is a pathological liar. That said, Rudy does have a difficult charge trying to explain the lies and childlike behavior of his only client.

All of the above does not trouble me near as much as the United States Congress being complicite...they epitomize allowing evil to prevail with silence.

And-________if somebody can justify President Trump's hateful treatment of a 22-year Navy vetreran who was a two-year prisoner of war, please do so. And Trump calls black NFL players SOB's for kneeling during the National Anthem...really? Trump "speaks with a forked tongue."

A New War Plan

Thumbing through some Biblical scriptures recently, I came across Matthew 24:6, which speaks about 'wars and rumors of wars' that will always be a reality. Of course, we are told not to fret because the end will not be contrived by man. I did a bit of research and discovered that the United States has been involved in wars or 'conflicts' 80-times in its history and 40-times since World War II. That's a lot of fighting. The most disturbing number is 1.1 million Americans who have been killed in all those wars.

Afterward the thought occurred to me that nations world wide would be smart to agree on new rules of engaging in wars. The United Nations should call together all nations and hammer out guidelines on how wars are engaged. My suggestion would serve all countries very well. Let's suppose we agree to fight wars with men and women sixty-five years old and older. Now before you dismiss this idea as silly, hear me out.

(1) Old folks like to travel. Drafting old timers 65+ would be appealing to the venturous soul who wishes to travel abroad. (2) I understand that oldsters might not have good 'aim sight' but it would be relative in so far as we consider 'old enemies' won't be moving fast...slow moving targets. (3) All governments would reduce retirement costs, nursing home costs, health insurance costs while freeing up all those handicap parking spaces reserved for senior citizens at the local malls.  (4) Not sure about other nations but think of the money the USA would save on social security.

Speaking of an 'Old-Folks War Plan' can you imagine the reduced waiting time at doctors' offices, faster moving traffic, not to mention faster moving checkout lanes at super markets when standing behind that elderly lady rummaging around in the bottom of her purse 'for exact change!'

PS. Okay, you're on to me...I jest. However, I do believe we'd be involved in fewer wars if Mothers and grandmothers were leaders ALL NATIONS...

A Christian With Barnacles

Recently, a regular blog reader  asked: "What kind of Christian are you, Mel?" The tone in his voice suggested that I was not measuring up to his preconceived notion of how one who claims Christianity should comport one's self. Well, if a Christian is supposed to be pure and perfect in the eyes of others or in or even in reality then pencil me in as a failure. I am a struggling sinful individual who is constantly seeking a closer relationship with my Lord. That said, I fall short in some manner each day.

In Elizabeth Barrett Browning's sonnet 43, she begins, "How do I love thee, let me count the ways I love thee... That said, let me offer just a few ways in which I will disappoint others if they dare look for a pure Christian walk in my steps. I tend to be too controlling. I fight against impatience and intolerance. I can become irritated with others' procrastination and negativity. I tend to miss opportunities to bring witness of my Lord's gift of salvation. Too often I brainwash myself that I cannot do something because I'm convinced that I'm tired or too old for a younger generation to embrace. I could go on and on for my 'weakness traits' are numerous. However...
The above acknowledged, I shall nevertheless start each morning with a prayer of thanksgiving and close each day with a prayer of personal evaluation. Thus I hope to improve my Christian persona but more importantly improve my walk with Christ.

If I Had My Way

I mentioned in a previous blog the incident I encountered several years ago when visiting an antique shop in Southern, Illinois. That day, I used the public restroom and noticed a sign over the commode, which read: "Lower the lid when finished." Obviously, the note was written by a female requesting men to follow those directions. Why not a note reading: "Lift the lid when finished?!"

My point is this...we'd all truly like to have things OUR WAY. Well, it doesn't stop at the toilet for me. I'd like to have many things my way...
...Theater Movies would start at advertised times and coming attractions played after the feature film.
...All kitchen and bathroom counter tops four inches higher...I'm 6'3"
...Baseball managers permitted only here pitcher per game.
...Dance recital held to a 90-minute time limit.
...No three point shot in high school basketball.
...Parades with horses at the beginning to bring more excitement for by-standers.
...Veggies would be unhealthy and chocolate would reduce cholesterol.
...Eighteen wheeler trucks could only use the interstate between the hours of 9:00PM to 7:00AM.
...Mail delivered only three time per week.
...Black male singers would not be permitted to grab their crotch.
...White male singers would not be permitted to pretend their black.
...Child sex offenders would go to prison for life on first offense.
...Now that Melanie's parents are American citizens end this terrible 'chain migration.'
...Term limits for ALL ELECTED OFFICIALS.
...People with handicap parking permits must have a noticeable limp.
...College athletes must be held to entrance the same standards as every other student.
...If a college athlete signs a pro contract after only one or two years of college he must pay back $.

We Best Not Mess With Some Messages

A few weeks past, I noticed a roadway billboard with a photo of an attractive young family with this notation: 'A CHURCH FOR THIS GENERATION.' Evidently a nearby church believes religion, as they see it, had to change for 'new' times. My first thought? Jesus didn't change, but people have changed and now need different religion-practice, which fit their emerging different life style and personal needs. Let's be honest. Most things change in our society because powerful people with money or masses of people seeking a comfort zone demand the change.

If I compare churches of yesteryear with the new wave non-denominational churches and even the traditional churches, I note the following: preachers used to spew hell-fire and damnation messages from the pulpits. The simple message, 'you best turn away from sin, confess and seek a pure life or spend eternity in hell's fire. Today's pulpit comments are more warm and fuzzy with more entertainment. The feel good sermon fits these times.

Lots of change happened in my journey. Doctors no longer make house calls but wait for you to come visit them where they can recommend a specialist you might see if some insurance guy two thousand mile's away gives the "Okay." My generation respected policemen and teachers. Today's generation calls police 'pigs' and blame teachers for childrens' failures. Parents of my generation would jerk a knot in a youngster's tail if he acted up in public. Recently, I was eating dinner in a restaurant where two little boys were chasing one another around tables with forks in their hands...their parents were smiling and glancing at nearby tables seemingly seeking a confirmation that their off springs were charming.

It was inevitable that churches would one day realize that people are not going to come to church and tithe when listening to sermons telling them they must change their ways after being raised to believe the morning sun pops out of their derriere's. Back in the day, church messages were fair and balanced, somewhat like Fox News.

Some Change Good Some Not So Good

Times have surely changed! Our son, Steve, daughter in-law Kathy, daughter Pam, grand-daughter's Lindsay and Amanda all teach in public schools. All will begin their respective school years within the next two weeks. In the 1950's, I recall East St. Louis public schools beginning the Tuesday after Labor Day and considering buildings back then were not air conditioned it was a good thing. Of course, back in that day school dismissed for the summer in early June and today the kids are out for summer vacation early May.

Hopefully, the dress attire will improve in school because it's getting very questionable if not disgusting during summer months. Following are notations I made this summer regarding the demise of 'good taste in apparel:'
  1. If your kid has a nasal drainage issue, don't let the kid get a nose ring or grow a mustache.
  2. Clothes that expose the body's mid-section should only be worn on the beach and that can even be
      problematic.
  3. Those open-toed sandals should not expose toes pointing East-West or rainbow colored toenails.
  4. Tattoos with arrows pointing at various body areas with comments are simply in bad taste.
  5. Unshaven gals should not wear sleeveless tops.
  6. I don't care how big a man's arms are he should not wear cut-off sleeves. (Your armpit hair is no
      more attractive than your wife's).
  7. Women whose breast have stretch marks resembling a Los Angeles freeway should not wear low
       cut tops.
  8.  Please spare others the disgusting moment standing behind you in a store checkout line and you
are wearing Bunny house-slippers and the pajamas you wore last night!

Finally, I ask all parents to check the printing on their kid's t-shirt before leaving the house. A few years ago, I was shopping in one of those open markets and noticed an adult man holding his daughter's hand walk by me. His T-shirt read, "If you ain't Lutheran, you ain't s*#t." Perhaps other Lutherans were appalled and yet they were likely more irritated by the Middle Eastern gent whose T-shirt saying was printed in Arabic. You know how we Americans' think: 'If you're gunna live hear speak English and print your dumb t-shirt comments the same...in English.

Gotta Have a Home

Oldsters like me need to come to grips with the inevitable, i.e. Where you gunna live when it's determined you cannot function alone? I made my decision several years ago as did my wife. My wife told me she wants her kids to put her in a nursing home, I quickly nixed that choice and indicated that I will choose one of the kids to 'house me.'

As most know, we have three adult children; Steve, Dawn and Pam. Each adult child's home-location offers interesting perks and advantages. Steve lives 20-minutes from Bush Stadium and perhaps 35-minutes from the best Italian food this side of Italy...talking about 'The Hill.' Daughter Dawn lives in a spacious home which affords an old man great privacy and besides that the home sits next to a  fishing lake. Youngest daughter, Pam lives in Jacksonville, which offers old friends and familiar surroundings that may benefit an old man who may have a tendency to get lost.

By process of elimination, daughter Dawn struck out sometime ago. Let me explain. On two different occasions over the years Dawn and husband, Shawn backed their vehicles into my automobile. I don't care about any damage to my car, it can be fixed but understand an old man with bad hearing moving slowly just might be in harms way walking about those premises given the obvious>> they don't look around backing up! The second strike on Dawn came when I heard that Dawn forgot to pick up one of her children from school. With senile dementia can you envision an old man wondering about the senior citizens center after four hours of bingo confused with his whereabouts. Dawn's final strike came when she left her SUV running with two hyper designer pups inside the auto and one jumping about inadvertently locked the doors from the inside. That scenario has all kinds of scary possibilities for an old guy in the backseat strapped in a harness.

I knew the girl was different back during her middle school days when her choice of a study room was our bathroom...she said it was "cozy." That said, I'm lookin for a home...gotta have home!

I Offer Regrets to the Young Fan

I was nine years old sitting in Sportsman Park with my dad hoping that the rain would stop and I could see my heroes run onto the baseball field. I anticipated the hustling style of play that Enos Slaughter would show. I envisioned Marty 'Mister Shortstop" Marion gliding into the hole and making a tough play look easy. I couldn't wait for Stan 'The Man' Musial to set himself in the batters' box in that familiar crouching stance. They were the 1948 St. Louis Cardinals...my heroes!

Well, on this day the weather would deny those anticipated moments. I suppose my dad recognized the disappointment in his son's face as the public address announcer said: "Today's game has been canceled and will be rescheduled at a later date."

As we made our way to the exit, my father spoke, "We're not leaving just yet." When I asked why, dad said, "After the players shower and dress, they will leave the stadium by this exit and you are going to ask some of them for their autograph." We waited and waited; seemed like hours but I'm sure it was not. Soon I recognized players emerging from the doorway. Oh my, Terry Moore, then Red Shoendienst, Whitey Kurowski, Marty Marion and finally, 'The Man.' Every player stopped and signed my scorecard. Marion even asked me a question, "You a ball player kid?" Kurowski signed his name and said, "Thanks for hanging around son." I cannot capture in words the thrill of the moment, which still lives in that little boy's heart inside this aging body.

Recently, I read a report that a national baseball card show listed Major League Baseball players' names and the 'cost' of their autograph and a photo with them. Former St. Louis player, Albert Pujols will expect a nine year old kid to pay him $300 for his signature and an additional $300 for a photo with him. This is the same player who points towards the heavens when crossing home plate after hitting a home run.

I'm sorry kids that your baseball heroes are such greedy disingenuous phony people.

Moving Towards Calamity?

Walking my neighborhood or driving about the country side, I often notice that sign: 'Pray For Our Nation.' I'm sure you also have noticed. It appears to me that this plea message is most urgent these days considering the growing divisiveness amongst our people.

The healthy open debates around differing opinions and political persuasions has long 'left the station' of civil discussion as it is reduced to name calling, threats and a general tone of ugly intolerance. As one peruses the Facebook comments one readily becomes aware of a deep hatred in our country. In recent weeks, I've noted photos of people with high powered military style weapons with such captions as, 'Just give us the word, Mr. President.'

The worst Angels within us all has been awakened. That 'sleeping dog' of racial and religious intolerance has been kicked. Trust in our governing institutions and the free press has been crippled by constant attacks. Currently, we are a nation of very suspicious and angry people teetering on the precipice of physical confrontation with anyone who opposes our views. Given the ease of weapon procurement, I fear for our countrymen, indeed we should 'Pray For Our Nation.'

Return To Sender

I recently made a daily-routine change for reasons of my mental well-being. Let me explain: Back in those 'working days,' I had no idea when our mail was delivered. Since retirement, I'm around the house mostly and consequently I hear the dog bark. Yodie barks at Larry the mailman every day between 10:15am to 1030am. After a brief conversation with Larry about the weather, I retrieve our mail. Naturally, I am now hooked or shall I say 'conditioned' to examine the mail.

I've noticed that over the years our mailings have changed drastically. We once got exciting offers of travel and home improvement items and terrific investment possibilities. These days the mail is all about heath and aging. I can recite a number of hearing aid products as well as natural medicines for arthritis. I'm reminded of a nearby bus departure time on Tuesday's to a central, Illinois gambling casino and the gift of $5.00 to get me started. Speaking of buses, I receive travel information every fall for a New England fall colors bus trip. I wonder about the 'pee stops' frequency. I need to ask.

I know all the perks of every senior living center in Decatur and the funeral service and internment costs of all mortuaries in Macon, Morgan and Madison counties.

I continue to send my annual dues to the Masonic Order, the Scottish Rites Temple and Shriner's but I never attend meetings or go on trips with my Masonic brothers. To be honest, I joined those organizations, as did my two sibling-brothers, to please our father who insisted we do so. It's true   those organizations do good work and that's why I support financially. I just never cared much for  Cub Scouts and Boy Scout meetings therefore why would I think it would be more fun with old guys?

Regarding our mail? Folks, if I wrote a letter a day using our return (Charity) label address-stickers, I would have to live to be 101...that's twenty-two more years years.

Oh, that routine change?...I now take my walk between 10am and 11am.
