Gerry and I attended Maundy Thursday Church Service last night at Decatur's Grace United Methodist Church. I was thinking during the musical prelude to the sermon how this Christian 'Holy Week' must offer a huge target for those agnostics and atheists who poke fun at the events of a crucifixion-death and a resurrection to eternal life, which is advanced by we who believe. Come please, the notion of leaving the grave and 'coming-to-life' is somewhat difficult to put the mind around! Those skeptics will ask the Christian to explain or 'prove' with some scientific evidence or logic how this mysterious concept could possibly happen; we cannot 'prove' anything.
I choose to turn the table on the questioning-skeptic and ask them to 'explain' the winds, the mountain formations, the oceans, creatures that never leave the waters, the beasts that roam the earth, the flight of birds, the thunder and lightning and the likeness yet 'individual' uniqueness of every human past and present. Naysayers and faultfinders who may ridicule this Holy Week, are in fact, significant elements to the Christian tenet that there is a conflict between good and evil and believers have victory through Christ's victory over the grave.
There is another aspect to my position of 'BELIEVING;' Albert Einstein. You all recall that chap. I am guessing that Albert was a rare human who knew most of the 'answers' to most of the questions. He was likely one of the best minds to ever walk this earth. Einstein once said, " He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe of God's mighty handiwork is as good as dead."
Folks, there's a train a comin' be prepared to get on board. Meanwhile, have a Blessed Easter and don't forget to get to church early before all the good seats in the back pews are taken! I wish you a joyous Easter celebration and may your FAITH sustain you always. Don't stay away from those pews; the building (church) will remain 'open' for business every Sunday between Easter and Christmas.
