A few years ago, I believe 2009, the University of Illinois President resigned for his involvement in a scandal allowing students of the wealthy and powerful to circumvent the academic admission standards. Shameful to state the obvious.
On the athletic side, after allowing 'program-builder,' Bill Self to leave for KU, the Illini settled for Bruce Weber and then fire him with a tenure record of 210-102...go figure!
The Fighting Illini sports' leadership behavior becomes even more questionable. At least questionable from a perspective of moral fairness and even-handedness. A week before the opening of last football season, Illnois Athletic Director, Mike Thomas fired head coach Tim Beckmann and replaced him with assistant coach, Bill Cubit. Cubit, under much difficulty and stress finished the season with a 5-6 mark. He was rewarded with a two-year contract extension just three months ago only to be fired over the past weekend by new Athletic Director, Josh Whitman.
I believe it is insignificant of the new hire to justify this bizarre sequence of administrative decisions. Josh Whitman can announce Lovie Smith or Knute Rockne's great grandson as the new Illini football leader and it still fails to cover the 'stench' hanging over the Champaign-Urbana Campus. You just don't treat people that way...well, unless you're the Chicago Cubs.
There are many signs these days, which suggest America's 'core values' are trickling down much faster than Ronnie Reagan's economic growth-theory.
