New Year Predictions

It's that time of year when we Americans seem to be preoccupied with what the New Year may hold for us. Many of those religious soothsayers come out of the woodwork to tell us that Jesus spoke to them and then they precede to offer their New a Year's predictions.
I recall a few years back when the Rev. Pat Robertson suggested that the coming year would see worldwide violence, a recession followed by a stock market crash.  Let's be honest, any middle school student could predict worldwide violence as long as there is a 'middle east.'
After most of  these predictions do not materialize, the good reverend suggests that he suspects people prayed for better outcomes and the Lord listened and answered those prayers. If that' s the case, I shall pray that the Lord speak to these preachers and tell them to stop guessing about 'future outcomes' and just serve the Lord's people.
That said, I have my own 2015 predictions, which I conclude without Divine help: Birds will continue to fly into my patio windows, parents of school children will continue to bitch about teachers giving homework and coaches yelling at players. Folks will continue to talk out of both sides of their mouth regarding 'race relations' and the Mexican border issue problems will be resolved as Americans go to ALL AstroTurf lawns.

Some Get A Pass

The local newspaper headline Sunday past heralds 'New Year Brings New Illinois Laws.' After reading carefully, I still cannot find a much needed law. There should be a federal law requiring physicians to be drug-tested.
School bus drivers across the country are drug tested as are 'over-the-road truck drivers,' professional athletes, college athletes and a number of other workplace folks.
I leave you with two thoughts: go figure and best wishes.

The Centerpiece

He entered this world in a lowly stable amongst the filth and stench of sheep; He departed this world on a lonely hillside nailed to a crude cross amongst ridicule and slander.
The thirty-three years between those events, He brought messages of love, forgiveness, tolerance and service to others; a blueprint for a promise of eternal life.
Today, amidst our self-absorbed gift exchange and over-indulgence in food, may we not lose sight of the 'reason for the season' and the greatest gift to behold. Merry Christ mas.

Enjoy The Moment

Ray Charles sings, "Why can't it remain all through the year, each day the same; that 'Spirit' of Christmas..." What a wonderful thought!
I suppose we (people) are just too self-centered with our entrenched ethnocentric attitudes. We are convinced that our (ethnic) heritage trumps all others, our way of worship is the 'right way' and my dad can beat up your dad.
Ethnocentrism is a powerful force, which weakens human relations. However, the reality is there is no inherent difference between Jews and Christians / Blacks and Whites. On December 26, the spirit of Christmas will, unfortunately give way to the spirit of ME & Mine!
Here's the deal: If you truly embrace the Christmas Spirit it will surpass Ray Charles desire for that 'spirit' to last throughout the year but it extends the contract for 'eternity.'
Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year.

Merry Holidays

This is the week that we receive intense warnings about the 'secular boogieman;' the boogieman who stole Christmas. I am not talking about the Grinch but those evil people who insist on not wishing folks 'Merry Christmas' but say that awful phrase, 'Happy Holidays.'
Be not confused my fellow Christ-followers, the word 'holiday' is many things: a festival, a feast day, a celebration, an anniversary and YES, a Saint's Day and most certainly a Holy Day.
Embrace the birth of the King of Kings; the only thing in your closet is clutter and the only thing under your bed is dust...there is no boogieman but only political pundits with divisive hearts.

A Legacy of Love

Yesterday marked the second anniversary of my mother's passing; she was 93. Strange, it seems as though she has been gone much longer. I surely miss her and the frequent telephone conversations as well as those quick trips from Decatur to the Metro-East area and sharing a lunch.
I had a close and trusting relationship with my mother. I suppose one anchor of that relationship was cemented when a six-year old boy's daddy is called away by his nation to fight in  the Second World War; she served two roles during formative years. It is often said, "Times make the man." I would offer that 'circumstances' forge a relationship.'
I will think of both my mother and father during this Christmas Day. I will feel great blessings as I look around my living room knowing that my children and many of our grandchildren knew so well the people they called: Mamaw and Papaw; this old man's mom and dad.

Come Now Boys; Let's Be Christians

We find out that secret negotiations between the United States and Cuba give hope to normalizing the two nations' relationship. Well. lo' and behold Republican Marco Rubio states that President Obama demonstrates that he is 'ignorant in foreign policy.' Surprise - Surprise! I cannot wait for the anti-Obama southern crowd led by Mitch O'Connell and Lindsay Graham, anchored in regional-bigotry weigh-in on the topic.
I offer three (3) points for consideration: (1) History reminds us every December 7, of the (1941) surprise attack by Japan at Pearl Harbor. Today, Japan is one of America's biggest international trade partners. (2) Communist China, with its questionable record on human rights, exported over 440 million in trade dollars to America in 2013. (3)Imagine you are a 'Black' person in America. The year was 2008, and a 'Black' man has been elected President. You suddenly believe that all the 'dreams' of the late Dr. Martin Luther King are coming true. In the ensuing years however, you witness the most blatant disrespect towards an American president in our nation's history. Obama is targeted by the 'the other' political party leaders as a 'marked man.' The openly stated attitude is 'stop Obama at every turn that he may only serve one term.' Obama is called a liar in the chamber of Congress, which is broadcast nationally. He is accused of being an illegitimate President because he is not a U. S citizen, his faith is questioned and my goodness he and his wife surely belong to some secret terrorist group; they do 'fist-bumps.'

Connect those dots and if you fail to see the disingenuous bullshit regarding renewal of trade with Cuba and the ignorant bigotry of some politicians then be thankful for your shoulders; your head can go no farther.

Think Before You Speak

I have one thing in common with Toy Poodle, Yodie...we both need to avoid liquids after 6PM. When the pup avoids liquid intake he sleeps the night through and if I avoid liquids, I likely only walk my enlarged prostate to the 'John' three times a night instead of six.
My doctor told me that old farts, like me, often exasperate the late night urinating frequency because of anxiety. "  "You should think relaxing thoughts while standing before the commode," said the Doc.
The other night while waiting for things to begin, I found my sleepy-eyed thoughts take word-form while standing before the throne...I spoke saying, "Come little fella do your thing." I have no idea why I said those words aloud. Of course my wife, lying in bed, heard me talking. She yelled, " Who are you talking to?" I said, "An old friend you once knew." She did NOT think the comment was funny.

Surely, HE Made Us Different

I notice some great differences between my wife and I when it comes to clothing-shopping techniques. First, my wife is most 'at-home' in a retail store; I am not. Sales clerks cater to my wife with a lot of gobbledygook chit-chat. Those same clerks know better when approaching me. They usually say, "Those pants are on sale today only."
Sales clerks know that women are perpetual shoppers whereas if a man is in the store HE NEEDS some thing NOW!
My wife will try on item after item and hold other clothing in front of her while looking into a mirror. Me? If it has an elastic waist band and does not 'ride-up-the-crack -of-my-butt,' I'm good to go! There is one other shopping difference:  My wife can produce a receipt from 1976; I often leave the receipt on the store checkout counter.

Never Give In ; Never Give Up !

A couple of days ago, I watched the movie, 'It's  A Wonderful Life,' starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. I suppose I have seen this 1947 film classic more than fifty times. The movie seems to grow in appeal with each passing Christmas / Holiday Season. Why not, given the contemporary societal backdrop of darknesss, sadness and despair? Today we brouse our morning newspaper to read of school shootings, killings in American streets, terrorist attacks and beheadings of innocent people along with reports of a disconnected government. The very people we elect to guide us through perilous times dismiss the idea of compromise and cooperation as they grab for power and personal wealth.
The movie, 'It's a Wonderful Life,' reminds us that life is worth living, we should appreciate our blessings and the importance to marry the right person. Finally, as Clarence, The Angel, said to George Bailey, " No man's a failure who has friends."
May you count many blessings and friends the Christmas Season.

Fixin' To Agree

Yesterday while channel surfing for weekend news, I discovered that CNN, Fox News and MSNBC all held differing views and opinions on immigration reform, foreign policy and the definition of torture. There was one broadcast commonality on all three channels: Each cable news network was 'running' the exact same Viagra commercial; thus it appears that when old timers begin experiencing erectile dysfunction party politics will compromise. And you can bet your sweet ass that the one party, which does not wish to have insurance companies cover birth control costs will fight for insurance company paid 'weenie-lifter-pills.'

Works For Me

Abe said, "You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time but you can't fool all the people all the time." Keep in mind that those 'all's & 'some's' can be applied to people 'liking' and 'appreciating' you. Some do some don't and some have their minds set in absolutes!
I learned this very valuable lesson at age eleven and I have never asked a quarter since. This attitude and approach served me well the past sixty-four years in all I have faced. I have a compass for service and wish to please those I love and those in need and I want nothing other than a clear pathway! I need no approval nor any hoorah. Actually, I was fortunate because early in life I understood that to live gloriously was predicated on one major factor: identify your passion to serve some thing other than self.

As Good As It Gets?

Melvin Udall, played by Jack Nicholson in the movie "As Good As It Gets," suffers from obsessive compulsive behavior. One movie scene shows Melvin coming out of his psychiatrist's inner office into a crowded waiting room; Melvin surveys the waiting patients and speaks, "What if THIS is as good as it gets?"
I would pose similar questions regarding current events: Does anyone really believe that ANY of the following will, in deed, 'get better:' 1. Conditions in the Middle East, 2. Prejudicial attitudes in America and religious intolerance around the world, 3. Credit card scams, 4. divisive politics reflected in American government, 5. America's Obesity, 6. Healthcare accessibility, 7. Necessary financial support for America's public schools and 8. General narcissism and greed?
This said, I do believe that the St. Louis Cardinals baseball organization could 'get better' by signing one more frontline pitcher. Hey, let's do what we can!

Lesson? Don't Get Hurt / Don't Get Sick!

Ten weeks ago while out for a morning three-mile 'power-walk,' I stepped from a curb and heard and felt a loud pop in my left knee. The event sent me to the ground. I gained my composure and hobbled four blocks home. I finally went to my health care provider (physician assistant) for an evaluation. She said I could try rehab. I did. I was getting somewhat better but still had some knee pain. I finally had an X-ray a week ago and the PA told me I should get an MRI. Her nurse telephoned to tell me my MRI is scheduled for this coming Friday. One hour later that same nurse telephoned to tell me my health insurer denied the MRI request.
I telephoned United Healthcare and spoke to Jackie who, after my long explanation she said that my problem was not her area of expertise. Jackie transferred me to Chelsea who took all my information and explanation and preceded to tell me she could not help me.  Chelsea transferred me to 'Carl' who listened to about half my story only to interrupt telling me he was NOT associated with any insurance company but was a parts manager for an auto dealership in South Alabama...I would NOT make up this crap. Finally, I got hold of Mary (United Healthcare) and she explained that my provider (Physician Assistant) failed to provide 'consistent published clinical evidence' to have the MRI.
I immediately called my Physician Assistant but she and her nurse took the afternoon off.
I went to the sporting goods store last night to purchase a 'leg-weight' machine...wish me luck!

Dumb Asses Usually Beget Dumb Asses

I read where a recent federal report backs the medical practice of circumcision. There is evidence that the procedure reduces infections, sexually transmitted diseases and some forms of cancer. Therefore, health insurers should pay for the procedure. On another matter, I await the first class action lawsuit against insurance companies and drug manufacturers for melanoma, which is traced back to Viarga and sunshine; I suspect the lawsuit will be filed in Florida given the number of old retired-limp-weenie fellas walking the beach.
I am waiting for the federal government to discover that once they pass a law requiring a vasectomy procedure on newly born males and then "only" reverse the procedure after the (21 year old) male has a steady job, $20,000.00 saved and memorized 12 nursery rhymes; there would be a drastic reduction in KKK membership and no protesters burning and looting businesses!

Keep It Simple / Keep It Real

Every television channel seems to be covering protest-activities across America on the heels of two recent grand jury decisions not to indict police officers who, in the line of duty, caused a black persons' death. It appears some crescendo has arrived begging this country to have that ' national conversation' about race relations in the United States.

Okay, let's have the talk. However, please cut to the chase so we might actually do some thing to address the problems. Problems, which have long been identified by 'Black scholars; let me repeat;
Problems, which have been long identified by 'Blacks' themselves.'
After any national conversation it will be concluded that Black children need to be better educated than they currently are and secondly, Black men need to stay in the home with women they impregnate and thus create the role-model blueprint for family. Black men and women creating a home environment for children can then ban together with other black parents and demand a better education for their kids.
Shall we cut through all the bullshit and agree to put Maury Povich on the streets looking for work?!

Say Goodnight Gracie

My wife has a unique and controlling communication technique. She will ask a question that calls for a direct answer however, if she does not get the answer she wants, she will ask the question again and again some times re-phrasing the question. Examples: two days ago we had cottage cheese and peaches on our supper table as one item but not on my plate and she asked, "Don't you want any cottage cheese and fruit?" I responded, "No, thanks." "I thought you liked cottage cheese," she said. "I do but I don't want any." "Just try a little, it's good for you," she insisted. The next mid morning, she held up some pajama bottoms that I wore one night and asked, "Are these dirty?" I said, "No."  (Now folks, I just made a decision on the cleanliness of my PJ's). My wife had not received her desired response thus she countered, "How many night's have you worn these pajamas?" Just to play with her, I said, "I can't remember how many times I have worn those pajamas." Suddenly, she left the 'laundry' discussion ans said, "I'm going to have some cottage cheese and fruit for lunch; would you like some?"

Not Always About You

A few St Louis Rams' football players, upon introduction last game, raised their hands signaling what has become symbolic in the recent Michael Brown killing; "Don't shoot!" Those players were out-of-order. You heard me; the players were dead ass wrong and if I owned the Rams, I would fine them significantly.
I understand that each of us have the right to express our social, political, religious views and any other opinions...But NOT while representing another entity while 'AT WORK!'
I would not want a gay police officer (in uniform) to walk down the street holding hands with his lover...okay on his day off. I don't want my family physician's office to display his choice of politics or religion...it is a work place where people of all beliefs have been invited and pay a fee for services rendered; I don't want propaganda bullshit!
When I coached, I made it clear to players...there are some things bigger than you. When you put on the uniform you sacrifice self.

Ain't No Comparison

I have always enjoyed song and singing. No doubt, my Methodist Church (old time gospel) upbringing planted the seed even before I can recall. There is never a day that passes that I don't spend 15-to-20 minutes with a hymnal or pop music lyrics singing aloud. Most often my wife and poodle, Yodie are the only ears to hear. There are times when I sing regardless who may be in my home; I just love music.
When our three children were teens traveling down vacation highways, we had an agreement that they could listen to 30-minutes of 'tapes' featuring their musical choices and then mother & I got our 30 minutes. Our son was bitten by the old man's choices and has a liking for them. I cannot say the same for my daughters but I do recall one daughter and husband selecting "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes' for their wedding song.
Some nights when sleep refuse its comfort, I retire to my downstairs den where my musical selections number approximately 1000 LP's, 1500 45's and 300 CD's. I may listen to songs from the '40's-'50's -'60's and a few newer releases. Many nights I will "burn" old 45s onto CD a make composites to send to friends.
I tend to be very critical of many of today's song stylist...in my opinion,  most cannot sing but they are loud, the men are usually unshaven and sloppily attired while the women are dressed 'selling' more than a song. If it sounds as if I believe the music of yesterday (1940-50-60) tops anything today, I confess to being correct. Let me make the case easy for you to understand: This Christmas season make it a point to shop the mall a few times and pay attention to the holiday songs. The greatest number of voices  you will hear are from the '40's '50's & '60's... Nate 'King' Cole, Perry Como, Brenda Lee, Bobby Helms, Elvis, Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Ray Charles and others from the period. I rest my case. I believe when all from those great lyric-singers generation are dead and gone, their decendents will be listening to Bing Crosby singing 'White Christmas.'

I'm Just Sayin'

It is easy for me to identify how I developed my liberal (social) views and tolerance. First, my maternal grandmother (Mammy Bennett) had my audience and was in my head with Jesus' teachings from my earliest recollections. Then obtaining a college degree in sociology sealed the deal. I am who I am.
Knocking aside others' myths and prejudicial beliefs about minorities has been a long passionate journey. This acknowledged, it does little to help the cause when those whom I support self- destruct with bull- head blindness. Case in point: Michael Brown did not deserve to be killed by a police officer that fateful day in Ferguson, Missouri. In the aftermath, Michael Brown should not be made into some saintly martyr. He appeared to be somewhat misguided about retail store economics. He also projected himself as a bully. I suggest Michael Brown should be alive today and perhaps awaiting trial for shopping lifting.
Another thing...when a black NFL player leaves traces of physical force on his young son's body , I don't need a black NBA player coming to that father's defense saying, "That's how black parents discipline." That is an absolute stupid comment. Thank God no one suggested that black men 'keep their women in line' by punching their lights out on public elevators!
My plea is simple: Many black people need to stop making it so damn difficult for a white social-liberal Christian guy to be on the side of minorities; God only knows that there are enough white, so-called Christians, who didn't have a Mammy and believe we sociologist are fools.
Black leaders need to examine 'talking points' or risk becoming akin to Fox News' perception of 'fair and balanced.'

Blah, blah, blah

I was driving down the highway and flipping radio channels when the familiar Rush Limbaugh voice came through the speakers. I have not listened lately to El Rushbo so I endured his narcissism for a few minutes. He was lashing out against CNN reporter, Don Lemon and as he did, of course, Limbaugh made derogatory remarks about Lemon being 'gay.' As expected, Rush soon brought Obama's name into his tirade with suggestions that Obama was waging a war on 'traditional' marriage.
Dadgumit, folks should pay attention to Rush on THIS ONE;  Rush should know something about traditional marriage since he is on his fourth such arrangement.

Loving Remembrances

This December 21st will mark the second year of my mother's passing. I truly miss talking with her. I telephoned her 4-or-5 times a week. It was perhaps her laughter that I enjoyed the most.
I remember as a young child living on Rosemont Avenue in East St. Louis; Friday nights were my dad's union meeting nights. A fella with whom he worked attended the meetings and the man's wife would visit with mom until the men returned. I can close my eyes even today and hear those two ladies chatting in the nearby room. Their voices were soft and soothing and my mother's voice was particularly comforting and reassuring. Her vocal tones soon brought quiet slumber to a 11 year old boy.
There are other voices I miss. My dad always spoke in confident tones that gave encouragement, which initiated motivation.
I had two childless aunts who took upon themselves the profound interest in all the nieces and  nephews. Each had a distinct charm and both required 'particulars' when responding to their questions. Both aunts had full volume tones. They too are silenced.
I suppose everyone, this time of year, has such reflections...I was blessed.

Happy Thanksgiving

Last Sunday, the preacher asked the question: "If you could only pray a prayer of Thanksgiving for ONE thing, what would THAT be?" Of course, it is an unfair question! In fact, many times my prayers become somewhat lengthy because I tend to 'itemize' my many blessings.
As I sat there in the pew (I got to church late and all the good chairs in the back were taken), I decided to play the preacher's game; it was a quick and easy answer that came to mind...if on this Thanksgiving day, I could thank my God but for one thing, I would thank Him for sending His Son to pave the way to eternal life.
I cannot close this rant with listing only one Thanksgiving prayer so let me finish saying, I never let a prayer moment pass that I don't thank The Lord for the health and safety granted my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Stop and think; we all want so very much for our off-springs and yet WE cannot provide the most coveted gifts for our love ones.

May your day be filled with thankful thoughts.

She Got Me Started

My wife walked into the family room and noted the televised college football ball I was watching. One of the teams was Florida State. She commented about the Indian 'logo' helmet worn by the Florida State Seminoles and asked, "Why do they get to use an 'Indian' for a mascot and Illinois cannot use Chief Illiniwek?" She likely wished she had not asked because I went on one of my lengthy rants about the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
In descending rank, I deplore the following organizations: Ku Klux Klan, Black Panthers and the NCAA. The first two are intolerant 'hate-groups' and the latter is a pompous, pretentious, greedy group.

I explained to my wife the old saying, 'Money talks; bullshit walks!' Whereas there is no existing Illini Tribe to throw money at to appease and thus use the name 'Chief Illiniwek mascot,' Florida State pays-off the Seminole folks. Of course the pompous NCAA ignores the money game and puts aside their holy war against its college members using degrading mascots and mascot names, which may offend ethnic groups.
My complete 'rant' on the NCAA is 573 pages long; I shall stop here.

Bogus

In 2011, the city of a Chicago had 433 murders. 70 percent were committed by 'Blacks' and 75 percent were 'Black' victims. This statistic suggests a hellava lot of 'Black-on-'Black' murder. Just a few weeks ago, a young, 4-year old black girl was sitting on her grandfather's lap when a stray bullet came through the wall striking the child and killing her.
Questions Where is the community and nationwide outrage? Where  is Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton? Where are the demonstrators? Where is the national media, especially  the 'rock-throwing' reporters from CNN?
Obviously, we can note a lot of disingenuous voices in our society today along with profound inconsistencies!

I Don't Recognize Today

Two doors South from our house lives twin brothers who are seniors at Decatur MacArthur high school. They live with their widowed mother. Both boys are better than 6'3"; one weighs in at 245, the other at 210. Upon graduation they intend to join the military. They are polite young men and over the past few years, we have funneled many dollars their respective directions with a variety of lawn care jobs. They are now comfortable enough to ring the door bell and inquire; "Can I make a few dollars today doing something." Often we have a legitimate need and if we don't, my wife manufactures a need.
This past Saturday, one twin knocked on the door at mid-morning and soon Gerry had him 'on-the-clock.' I noticed on three rather quick back-to-back moments, the lad was on his cell phone texting I suggested to my wife that she needed to ask the boy if he wanted to work or talk on the phone?
My wife jumped my crap and said,  "Stop acting like a crabby old man!" Next summer, I hope the boy's Army drill sergeant resembles my wife; warm, 'fuzzy-' caring and cuddling however, I am betting the sergeant will be a crabby-asshole...it's a different world than I remember.

Midnight Christmas Thoughts

My wife completed our Christmas tree decorations yesterday. It's a beautiful tree with a
lovely and serene Nativity Scene beneath. My wife is much like my late Father when it comes to Christmas decorations...passionately intense!
Just before midnight last night, I came downstairs to the living room and turned on the Christmas tree lights. In the stillness of those hours, I allowed my thoughts to wonder with recollections of Christmas past. I recalled the thrill of those cowboy toys, bikes and sports equipment. I remember mom and dad sharing a kiss under a mistletoe.
Soon my memory checked off those wonderful 'all-families' get-togethers at Grandpa E.V. and Mammy's home on Christmas Eve. The laughter and joyous interactive love was incredible; so was the homemade custard!
With the passing of grandparents, the Christmas gathering baton was handed to my parents...come hell or high snow drifts and great distances, the three sons were expected to deliver their families to my folks home Christmas Eve AND...WE DID. The decorations at my parents' home was a page out of Macy's and the spread of food would rival any Country Club. Our kids hold those fond memories, I am sure.
These days, my wife and I hold the baton and host the hoopla as memories are made for another generation of children.
Finally, I stopped my reminiscing and pushed the CD play button to hear the voice of Ray Charles sing, The Spirit of Christmas. Soon, the warm tears in my eyes swelled beyond the rim of the lids and flowed slowly down these wrinkled cheeks. Ray Charles asks, "Why can't it remain all through the year, each day the same...that  "Spirit of Christmas." My selfish heart cries, 'Why can't it remain all through life...and I know the answer; because life longs for itself. The Christ Child calls each to embrace His Spirit and then let go.

On-Road-Again!

Another milestone passed! I remember that magical age '16' when I took that written & behind the wheel driving test to get my first-ever driver's license; glorious day! Then there was that age '18' and I headed to the post office to register for the military draft. (That was back-the-day when the wealthy & the poor fought for America's freedoms). Three (3) years later at '21', I could belly up to the bar and have a brew...never was one to sit at the bar too often.
We'll at age 75, it appears that I am starting over again. Yesterday morning, I went to the driver's license facility to take a written test, eye test and behind-the-wheel test. This time around, the thought occurred that if I fail any one of the three test, I will be stuck at home watching Big Bang Theory re-runs 24/7! I stopped watching CNN sometime ago; one night I kept seeing Wolf Blitzer's face every time I closed my eyes.
Well, I handled all test. I did miss one of the 29 written test items; it had some scenario about my auto arriving at an intersection at the exact moment a boy on a bike at my right arrives at the intersection.
I am good for another four years. I will then be seventy-nine.
Post Thought: I think at seventy-five, I should be required to go directly into the military. Actually, I think the UN should have all nations send seventy-plus-year old fellas to war. There would be fewer casualties due to poor eye and bad shooting. If you did shoot some old fart you would be eliminating health care cost.

Make The Point

A few years ago, I was asked by a Metro-East high school to present a program addressing coaching discipline techniques. It appeared that one of that school 's coaches overreacted to a student-athlete's bad behavior using excessive physical running as punishment, which compromised the athlete's health. I did spend an evening with the school's coaching staff using several methods to convey what I called, "Sensitivity Decision Making."
The so-called bottom line message that I left with these sport mentors was this: 'Youngsters will mess up and behave badly at times. When they do, you must address the behavior in such a manner to preserve the honor and integrity of your program. However, remember when the athlete misbehaves the spotlight and scrutinizing is on him; do not invoke questionable punishment that would swing the wrong behavior spotlight onto the coach.'
Personally, I always thought that reduced game-playing time was the best punishment to get the attention of the misbehaving athlete and shape a more desire able behavior.
One of the biggest changes in parent-child relations, as it pertains to discipline, is the degree of 'negotiation' between parties. My parents' generation seemed to subscribe to the biblical charge; "Let your yes be Yes and your No be No."

Ain't It A Shame

Our Illinois State lawmakers tend to be a phony desigenuous collection of people. If you follow the 'cola wars.' You will note that cola giants Pepsi & Coke are required to bid for rights to place products in State facilities. Of course there is always some questions around the process and it's fairness. One lawmaker stated that it is the lawmakers responsibility to get the best financial 'deal' for its citizens. Now there is some gobbledygook crap!

These same lawmakers require public (middle schools/high schools) to unplug their vending machines in the name of healthy choices. Understand that the public schools, as the state facilities and universities benefit from the soft drink companies as they donated scoreboards and other athletic perks; a great financial bump for local school districts. Therefore, while our State fails to meet its constitutional financial contribution to local public schools they dismiss the 'Goose & Gander Story.'

Friday, November 14, 2014

To 'ban' or not to 'ban;' and the American answer is 'BAN!' We ban smoking in public places, we ban 'gay' marriage in many states and right here in Decatur,  Illinois, we ban loud music in public.  Garden City, New York bans washing your car in your driveway. Nine Orange County cities ban sleeping in your car. Some cities even have a ban on homeless people in public places; I suppose it is too depressing for 'them-that-got.' Of course the one ban that chaps my ass is the 'leaf burning ban.' It not only burns my butt, it is breaking my back!

We Americans get our jollies off and enjoy telling our neighbors how they should 'roll.'
Banning is nothing new to me. I recall as a young boy in 1947, (East St. Louis) when 'Negroes' could come into 'white' neighborhoods to clean houses but could not be 'in those neighborhoods' after 6PM; they were banned!
I am going to get some folks to unite and call for a ban on mattress sales on Veterans' Day, parents from little league sports and stupid people ahead of me in all lines!!!

I Share My Joy

We have a husband and wife who co-pastor our church. My wife enjoys a weekly Bible study class conducted by Mrs Pastor. Yesterday, my wife returned home from the class and shared some topic exchanges; she mentioned that Mrs Pastor told her that she has truly enjoyed meeting her (my wife) and said to her, "You are a hoot."
I smiled hearing the opinion. I am always glad for people to discover my wife's pure charm. I can only imagine what gems rolled across my wife's lips while discussing 'The Exodus.' Suffice to say, my sweetheart roller skates to the same music as Yogi Berra. Once while vacationing in the Missouri Ozark country, my wife said, "Have you noticed it really gets dark at night down here?" I simply responded, "Goodnight Gracie.
My personal favorite was on a snowy night when my Christmas shopping sweetheart telephoned me from the mall to tell me that she had locked her keys in the car. I had to call a locksmith and thus asked her where the auto was parked. She said, "It will be easy to find because the lights are on and the car is running." Goodnight Gracie!

Between a Rock & a Wet Place

Lately, I have 'put-on' a few pounds. Yesterday while negotiating the pharmacy aisle looking for aspirin and vitamins, I noticed a section filled with diet pills. Given my extra weight, which does not permit me to get into three of my favorite trousers, I stopped to examine and consider the diet pills,

It would appear one of the side effects using diet drugs is the possibility of bladder seepage. After much thought, I passed on the pills.  I could imagine losing the weight and having the front of those nice trouser always wet.

Probability Matters

I'm not the sharpest mind in any crowd. I know this because I often find myself wandering around Walmart's parking lot trying to find my car and this exercise comes on the heels of a seven aisle search for Cool Whip. Because of my limited brain power, I use 'probability' factors to negotiate life's maze. Example: I see 15 rather tall and agile teens stepping off a school bus; 2-white kids and 13 black kids, I immediately think>basketball team. I drive through Decatur's 'hood' of an evening and notice black men wearing large brim hats and gaudy gold, I think, 'drug dealers' who are NOT representing Walgreens. Entering a restaurant, I notice six older white gals wearing Red Hats and  cheap costume jewelry; my first thoughts?...They will 'probably' laugh too loudly and leave less than 10% tip for the waitress.

A few years back when our government went goofy with a color-code for terrorists' alert warnings, I recall some people worried about terrorists becoming certified public school bus drivers. Here's my 'probability' conclusion on that issue: Terrorists do their homework. At training sessions they watched videos of American students' behavior on school bus travels after school and on field trips. No terrorist is going to volunteer for THAT GIG!
Yesterday, my wife was downstairs cleaning out the utility room. She yelled up to me, "Do these basketball bounce?" I yelled back, "Hold them above your head and drop them to the floor!" I am wondering if she'll start talking to me today.

What Really Matters?

Bruce Rauner was NOT my choice but he is MY Govenor and I will pray for his leadership to be characterized by wise counsel and insightful decisions. I grow weary of inconsequential nitpicking by both political sides. Example: Some of my Democrat contemporaries attempt to make something of Rauner's post election comment that he telephoned Democratic leaders Madigan and Cullerton to express his desire to 'work together.' It seems Rauner did not actually speak to the gents but left voice messages. Oh, my goodness, 'he did not lie;' my fellow Democrats need to accept an ass-whupping and move along.

I am not hung up on the trival. I am more interested in what voters expressed as desires and how leaders respond. Fifty- one percent of Illinois voters said they wanted Rauner as their Govenor. Sixty-two percent of Illinois voters said they want the minimum wage to increase to $10.00 per hour. The people have spoken and I expect my Govenor-elect to embrace both of the peoples' wishes. Let's watch for that!

Full Circle

Seldom a day passes that our three adult children don't telephone us. They have always held a genuine concern for their folks but it is obvious that mom & dad's advancing years increase the 'check-ins.' My wife and I have never attached strings to our relations with the kids but I suspect their behavior pattern is in place by observing their parents' attentiveness to their grandparents. The 'blueprint,' was very clear and evident. It is the BEST return on any investment my wife and I ever made.

The only downside to these frequent telephone calls is our kids make fun of our television habits and bedtime.

Simply Stated

I never thought his line would be topped...but I believe it happened. Let me explain. Our son and daughter-in law's triplet boys will soon turn sixteen. When they were toddlers they played comments off one another that could be quite amusing. I recall one such moment when they were about three and a half years old. The three were lined up naked in the bathroom for an assembly line bath. Jake was in the tub and his father was soaping a wash cloth when another triplet, Jamie noticed that his brother's penis was erect. Jamie exclaimed pointing at the erection, "Jake, how'd you do that?" Jake in a matter-of-fact tone answered, "I just rubbed it." I truly thought that exchange would remain number one among 15 grandkids. I think a topper arrived this week.

Number fifteen grandchild, Ashlyn delivered a dandy to her mother. Ashlyn was coming off a week long bout with a flu like viral infection and towards the episode's end she experienced diarrhea. After several very loose bowl movements, the 31/2 year old girl said, "Mom, my poop is melting!"

Never Know Who's Watching

My first cousin, Bob telephoned yesterday morning to thank me for a East St. Louis high school baseball cap that I sent him. The current East St. Louis high school athletic director sent me two caps so I forwarded one to Bob.
Bob was a special individual in my youth. Although he was four years my senior, Bob insisted that I play summer sandlot baseball with his friends every day when I was nine years old. That summer of 1948 was a defining moment in my love affair and put me on a journey that would pay for a college education. I am indebted to cousin, Bob. I have not seen Bob for years. I am aware of his physical health problems and current challenges due to periodic updates from his younger sister.

We spoke for a few minutes and did a bit of reminiscing before the telephone conversation concluded. Just before hanging up, Bob once again thanked me for the baseball cap and told me as he has told me several times over the years, "Moe, Bob said, "I will always remember at grandpa E.V's funeral visitation when you and your and your mom approached E V's casket and placed one of your high school baseball medals inside grandpa's coat pocket. I thought to myself back then; this guy at 19 years old is special."

I appreciate Bob's recall and thanked him for his opinion. Truth of the matter, grandpa E V Bennett was blind in one eye and never could watch any of games; too difficult for the half-sighted elderly man to follow the baseball in the bright sunshine. However, grandpa EV always insisted that I stop by his home and give an account after each game...and cousin Bob; we'll, he started the ball rolling...those two were the 'special guys!'

Surely the General Public is NOT That Dumb

In case you forgot it was during the 2012 mid-term elections that the Fox News crew lead by Sean Hannity talked that doom & gloom and economic disaster with $4.00 plus gasoline prices. If we did not understand 'why,' the Fox News boys quickly explained it was  caused by President Obama. We'll I'll be damned if those conservative fellas not only refuse to give the President any kudos for gas prices dropping to around $2.75; those narrow-minded, 'sell-your-soul-for a vote' right wingers now say that the lower gas prices are bad for the economy and you guessed it...it's Obama's fault.
Please support your local educational institution; our only hope is to insure a basic education so a person with fifth grade knowledge can see through this BS propaganda logic.

Halloween Game Plan

Last Friday morning, my wife gave me the annual Halloween instructions. I shall summarize: (1) Open the door and act really surprised, (2) determine immediately if the little treat-seeking-toddlers are children of close friends, neighborhood kids or total strangers. (3) Then I was shown the three different canisters of treats designated for the appropriate recipient. (4) Lastly, she explained that when we go to bed or should we run out of candy; 'turn off the porch light to signal for the Halloween treat-seekers to pass us by.' She then asked, "Do you have any questions?"  I said, "Yes. Is there a porch-light signal for political campaigners and Mormons to pass us by?"

Kids In Different Times

A few weeks ago, I was visiting with one of my younger grandkids who, like all the other grandchildren is very computer savvy. Not far into our conversation the youngster made a correct observation and candidly shared it with me when she said, "Boompa, you sure don't know much about computers. Perhaps feeling sorry for me she added, "But you know other stuff."  I grew up watching Art Linkletter's television show, "Kids Say The Darndest Things," therefore I am not surprised what comes forth from kids' lips.

As we parted that evening, the youngster put down the handheld gadget long enough to give the old man a goodbye hug. As I drove home that night, I recalled my adolescent years and instead of cell phones and electronic devices, I remembered: One large black telephone and when you picked it up off the receiver, you might hear a conversation taking place; we had 'party lines.' If the line was open a real live telephone-operator said, "Number, please!" She then 'plugged' you into a truck and soon you were talking with your friend. Of course, I knew more about 'anti-anti-over', Mother May I, Newspaper Boys calling out the headlines, Street Cars, Automobile Running Boards, Drive-In Movies, Car Hops, Poodle Skirts, White Buck Shoes, I.D. Bracelets, Character Notebooks, Whitewall Tires, Console Radios, Wax Records (45's & LP's), Grocery Store Deliveries, ice box, Family (Together) Supper-Dinner Time, Butch Wax for crew cuts,  Catfish Tubing, Neighborhood street-light games and chatter. I do recall when we did get rotary-dial telephones; we could then telephone a taxi-cab for an unsuspecting neighbor.
I conclude that my grandchildren are are both smarter and more productive than I.

She Made Her Point

My wife and I were watching television news when the announcer presented a new medical finding. It seems a study involving thousands of men concludes that those men having intercourse with 20 or more partners were less likely to develop prostate cancer. Evidently reducing semen (spermatozoa) reduces prostate cancer risk.

Before I could comment, my wife said, "Men can accomplish the same outcome if they pretend they are 14-years old once again and grab a Playboy magazine on the way to the bathroom!"

Making Sense Of It

I remember at a young age hearing my father say to mom, "I want our boys to have a better life than we did." Over the years, I often recall that comment and imagine that most parents share similar sentiments. Surely, we would agree that such a parental mission is most noble.

As I review the lives of my parents, my generation and that of my children and grandchildren, I simply wonder if 'a better life' truly resulted. Without condemnation, I do take note of one early childhood drastic change; the day care school impact on children. I contend that the 'womb-to-room' concept does not replace 'good' parenting. This cannot be better.

Personally, I never got in that parenting-parade of making a better life for my kids. I believed my life to be just fine and good enough for my children should I re-create the format. My wife and I always kept things simple so we could understand what the hell we were attempting. We expected our kids to be accountable, respectful, well mannered, maintain personal hygiene, achieve to their respective abilities, understand consequences and pursue something for which they had a passion.

Always a Good Morning

A few things I know a lot about; regarding most things, I am clueless. I know zero about electronic devices, and less about peoples' thinking. I am certain, however that my day begins better than most people! I often wake of my own accord because some arthritic conditions blow the morning alarm-whistle. Perhaps equal to that particular 'wake-up-call,' is the A.M. actions of my toy poodle, Yodie who gets the morning off and running. Yodie sleeps at the end of our king-size bed. He falls asleep each night with his front paws wrapped around the neck of a stuffed bear with his mouth clamped on the Bear's nose.

Sometime between 5:30 AM to 6:30AM, Yodie begins to stretch while looking my way. After his stretch-routine, he then meanders towards the old man to begin smelling my hair and wagging his tail from the rear hips. Each morning is the same, he acts as if he is  totally surprised that I am there. His excitement to renew our friendship bond is contagious with uncontrollable wiggling and squirming.
Scientific studies confirm that Yodie lowers my blood pressure, cholesterol and heart rate. He reduces my stress and tension. I also know that this kind of human-pet-bonding relationships results in both human and dog living longer.

Recently, I learned our 24-year old granddaughter, Lindsay and her 2-year old Shih-tzu-Bichon are nearing therapy-dog certification. Imagine a young woman getting it.  She has a special dog with the potential to give precious  moments to the young and old who are facing difficult times and will find joyous-relief from a puppy's boundless love. I must stop now. Yodie needs his teeth brushed and then I'll get on the floor and wrestle with him over his rubber duck...he really needs this moment...well somebody does!

Those Sinful Businesses

I recall, in the 1950's, a popular cigar store on Missouri Avenue in downtown East St. Louis. Perhaps, I was in the store a dozen times during my teen years. The store was near a city bus stop I used after high school basketball practice. I went in the store for a bottled soda to drink during my bus ride home.

The cigar store was always packed with men and smoke; never saw a woman in that cigar store. Once I used the bathroom and walking by the back room, I saw several card tables where guys were playing poker; lots of money on the tables. There was a couple of illegal slot machines against one wall and everybody in East St. Louis knew that the cigar store was an illegal betting joint and headquarters for the numbers racket.

I remember local people bemoaning the fact that the illegal business operation was ignored by the local law enforcement. The speculation was the police were paid-off to 'walk-on-by.'
Finally, the illegal operations did bite the dust...the State of Illinois shut them down; the State now 'runs' the gambling business...casinos, numbers game (lottery), etc. Of course some State officials are still 'skimming.' Now the State is moving into the drug business (marijuana); perhaps one day the government will operate brothels; interesting how morals changed over time...hey, business is business!

In The Sand is No Place For a Head

We all know the proverbial teen myth, 'It ain't gonna happen to me.' None-the-less, my nightly prayer has one repeating line; "Dear God please be with my grandchildren and help them to make GOOD choices."
I observe outrageous college campus behavior driven by the power of alcohol, the promiscuous attitude towards sex and a general theme, "I am a bigger idiot than you!"
Once the tattoo identified the male but no longer; body markings and piercings are the order of the day along with pretentiously showy and tasteless behavior accentuated with sloppy attire. Hardly a week passes that some pretty young girl goes missing only to be found dead and some creepy looking bastard is 'a person of interest.'
Subscribing to the belief that God helps those who help themselves, I encourage my children to be proactively involved in their children's lives, offer the answer "No" more than "Yes" and never apologize or explain their skepticism about their kids' activities.
I established parent-teenage relationship parameters many years ago with my kids and I land the same punches with the grandkids. I recall saying to my teen daughters, when driving them to and from those endless middle school parties, "What shall we talk about while we have this moment together, 'French-kissing or alcohol-drinking?.' My message?? Kiddos, you ain't the first to experience the carnival-circus and we are going to chat about the larger picture!!!

Who's Your Boogieman?

Put your head around these numbers: Military vets make up 11% of our population and 25% of our homelessness. Many of those vets were kids struggling in high school and going nowhere when they were recruited for the military. After likely fighting a corporate war, they came home with nowhere to go except a park bench.
Another story had easy to connect dots: Some toys produced with cheaper China labor is found in America toy stores and they contain chemical poisons. Homeland security worries about terrorists while communist China poisons our kids. Those outsourced toy manufacturing jobs sure enough have a 'big price' for the American consumer yet a huge pay day for corporations that bitch about taxes while attempting to 'break the labor unions.'
Wanna guess whose kids don't fight wars and don't sleep on park benches.

A Principled Man

Every election year, I always recall a political lecture I got from my father when I was sixteen years old. Several of my friends were getting much better summer-paying jobs through political connections and I knew that I could exercise that through my sports' involvement-connections and friendships. I told my dad of my intentions to tap that resource. I was somewhat surprised at his adamant refusal to allow that process to unfold.
He told me, "You accept those kinds of favors from a politician and soon they will tell you who to vote for and how much money you should contribute to a person's campaign." He went on say, "I'll be damned if any kid of mine is going to owe something to a politician. Therefore while many of my friends were making $2.85 per hour 'holding ' a highway road sign, I was sweating my ass off in a St. Louis factory raking in a whopping $1.65 per hour. The years?? 1956-57.

Easily Fixed

People of my parents' generation spoke often about having to 'walk good distances to school' when they were youngsters. With the building of more neighborhood schools, my generation perhaps walked five or six blocks to grade schools and a little farther to the junior high school. I confirm that as my history. I jumped on a city bus for the lift to the downtown high school site.
Of course, today's state laws require school children living a mile and one half from the free lunch program to be transported by one of the 'large-yellow-tin-cans,'i.e. school bus.
A recent 'letter-to-the-editor' from a Decatur school bus driver caught my attention. The driver was bemoaning the circumstance that he and his fellow drivers needed support from the school administration. It seems that overcrowded buses find students harassing one another and the driver as they yell vulgarity, throw objects, engage in horse play and fights, which often necessitates the driver to pull off to the roadside and address the behavior problems.
I heard gubernatorial candidate, Bruce Rauner recently say that should he be elected Governor, he'd turn more public school decisions over to the parents. This underscores the fact that politicians will say anything to be elected. The growing problems in public education are caused by parents. They want to send their little turd-blossoms from womb to room, have the schools teach manners, feed them, have after school programs that coincide with parents' work hours and deliver the little shits back to the door step sporting good grades and some awards.
The bus-behavior problem is easily solved: The driver identifies the misbehaving child. No questions asked, the child is banished from the bus until the next semester.

Who's In Charge?

I heard one of those parenting-experts on television last week talk about the need for the parent to recognize in that moment just before a child begins to throw a temper-tantrum. The parent can then offer distractions to take the child's mind off the tantrum. Seemingly, parents should be versed in the skills to deflect potential bad behavior forthcoming from their kids. The expert continued by showing various 'tools' to equip the parent.
The larger question is: How do we equip and prepare all the people with whom our child will interact in life so those folks may identify our child's mood thus offering the 'tools,' which will keep him from destroying the office or killing a co-worker.
My dad was one screwed-up parenting-dude. The first time I showed my ass throwing a temper tantrum in public, he took me aside and whipped that ass and told me, "Straighten-up boy!" Going forward, I TRIED TO FIT IN with others and PLEASE my parents.
Today, I feel as the fella who knelt at the Church alter for a long time one Sunday morning. The Priest asked the gent, "What's troubling you my son?" The grown man replied, "I worry about the day when our country is run by those who were never spanked and got trophies for participation."

Strongly Considering

I've decided to make some changes and approach things differently:
*   I'm not going to worry about repeating stories; I may tell them better the second time.
*   This year I'm going to do all my Christmas shopping at Cracker Barrel...before I eat.
*   I'm not going to bend over anymore to pick up things that I drop.
*   I'm going to begin embracing doctor appointments as 'social events.'
*   I think I may stop fighting back 'farts' in public places.
*   I will no longer worry about boring people talking about my grandchildren.
*   I am going to start dunking my donuts in restaurants.
*   Attempt to figure out how to dismiss 'socialism' as the politics of Christianity.

Can I Get An Amen ?

This Ebola disease presents super-serious concerns. It appears that it spreads expeditiously in places like Liberia. The 'experts' are saying within months Ebola could increase world-wide at a rate of 10,000 cases per week. Those so-called well-versed Doctors appear frequently on television with the obvious 'talking-points-mission' to reassure folks that things are going to be just fine; we Americans are all over this crap. Well, excuse me but I'm not so damn sure about that 'company-line.'
One Ebola patient is dead after walking into a major hospital sporting all the Ebola symptoms plus West Africa plane ticket stubs hanging from his shirt pocket and the nurse told him to go home and take an aspirin. He died within a week but not before he infected others.
President Obama recently said that a number of Nations have not been proactive in fighting the disease and "They need to step up." I suspect those are the same Nations who are waiting for the USA to take care of the world terrorists' groups. Lot's of luck waiting for that 'back-up' Pres!

On a personal note, I never get a flu shot. I had the flu once in my adult life; that was the 'only' year that I got THE shot. I do wash my hands more than any person suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). That said, I need to speak to my Preacher. He insists on those congregation moments of hand-holding during prayer. I find myself praying that the person in the pew who blew their nose during the entire sermon and whose moist hand is now clutching my hand suffers only from allergies!!!

My god Can Whup Your god !

A few weeks ago, I listened to a debate between a fundamentalist Muslim, a fundamentalist Jew, a fundamentalist Christian and an Atheist; the Atheist did not say he was a fundamentalist but I think we would assume that to be the case. I believe that anyone claiming they are a 'religious fundamentalists' means that they embrace literal interpretation of their 'holy book' scriptures while dismissing any other scriptures.
After listening to the over-the-top rhetoric and pompous claims, I concluded that these four folks had two things in common: (1) intolerance and (2) assholes.
I am a Christian but not a fundamentalist. I wish not to suggest how others should believe or worship. I only ask the following:
You can choose any road map to Heaven you desire or you can go to Hell. Just don't try to govern my country from your fundamentalist pulpit and stay off my grass!

It Ain't Over Till Nero Fiddles

My next-door neighbor is a long-time Decatur Fireman. He pulls those two-on two-off shifts. It's a good feeling knowing that several manned fire stations around the city are 'on-duty.' The police force is very visible throughout our city and likewise, I feel good that their constant patrolling-protection is intensified simply dialing 911 in a personal emergency. Down the street from my home, I notice a truck that advertises it's company's 24/7 emergency service with furnace, air-conditioning and or plumbing problems. I suppose there are several such companies offering those services. I hope I don't need to call on the aforementioned folks but it's good to know they 'stand-the-watch.'
On another emergency matter, I am one who always votes in every election. All those elected officials were 'sent' to Washington D. C. to act in the best interest of our Nation's needs. When an emergency happens, I expect those elected Congress folks to 'be on the job.'
HOWEVER--- as you read...
Those politicians are back in their home district campaigning for the up coming November 2014 election. I'm not an alarmist but our Nation face a big terrorist issue in the Middle East, a highly infectious disease (Ebola) is on the verge of a pandemic and a myriad of economic and social problems beg for joint government leadership.
Somebody pull the fire alarm and wake up Nero!

Communication Challenges

My thirty-nine year coaching career ended before 'social-media' became an issue carrying potential negative impact upon my basketball program; not the case facing today's coaches. At last Friday's educational conference presentation before middle school and high school coaches, I asked the question regarding the manner in which the coach addresses negative/critical 'tweets,' 'blogs' and Facebook comments by their players and the players' parents. A successful team depends upon a spirit of comradeship , enthusiasm and devotion to a common cause embraced by group members. I am sorry but unchecked the negative use of the social media can destroy the team.

I believe that a mandated pre-season meeting with parents and student-athletes should clearly state expectations of parents and athletes with regards to the 'social media' team comments with consequences outlined should violations happen.

My parents and grandparents would have no idea of today's meaning of the words 'tweet' and 'blog.' Of course, I recall in recent years when I told my daughter-in law that some little league baseball player had 'three dingers' and she thought I was absolutely crazy. It seems, in their immediate family a 'dinger' is reference to the 'penis.' A dinger to me meant 'homerun.'

Fortunate-Blessed-Humbled

This Friday morning, I am en route to Vandalia, Illinois where I will be one of dozens of educational presenters at the annual (three county) Professional Development Conference. I have presented more than six times at this educational institute and look forward to sharing a message today.
I began this 'speaking-thing' in the mid seventies and the frequency escalated while serving on various Illinois High School Association Advisory Boards in the 1980's. The IHSA endorsed my speaking presentations, placed me in the role of basketball analyst for two consecutive State Tournament and promoted my books. The IHSA also installed me as its national liaison to the American Sport Education Program. I was fortunate and blessed. I traveled extensively throughout Illinois presenting hundreds of times to administrators, coaches, student-athletes and parents. I offered three staple presentations: "Me, My Kid and Sport;" "Coaching Beyond The X's & O's" and "The Wish VS. The Will." After the release of my book, "99 Answers for the Sport Parent," the speaking engagements expanded across the country...did I state that I was fortunate and blessed?
It is said that should attendees at a conference pick up just one worthy idea the time spent was worth it. I would like to believe I will impart more than one worthy morsel of info...that is surely my intention!
I am humbled by the opportunity.

Ain't Nice To Fool The Experts

Since my playing background was in both baseball and basketball, I developed a deep love for both games. I chose to coach basketball because more lucrative circumstance was available for my family than had I coached baseball; just the way it has always been in high school athletics.
My fanatic interest in Cardinals' baseball explains why I have the MLB television package and Sirius Radio with MLB stations. I will listen to stations and programing 'in-season' and Hot Stove League talk year-around. That said, I am always amused at the perceptions and predictions offered by the so-called experts hosting those aforementioned media shows. Naturally, I am chuckling over those loud-fast-talking baseball gurus as they attempt to explain just why Clayton Kershaw is so inept in post-season, especially when pitching against the St. Louis Cardinals. Likewise, I note the absence of follow up pontification about 'how' the Angels with Albert Pujols would be frequent World Series participants.
I suppose it is too much for the mind to process when 'pondering' just why the two highest paid MLB teams are not even 'alive' in respective league finals and a potential World Series ticket. Maybe the answer is in Lindbergh's airplane's name?? Then perhaps it has something to do with Los Angeles Dodgers' management as it ignores the team-demoralizing bad behavior from the Yasiel Puig and Adrian Gonzalez while those Hollywood impostor baseball fans giggle.

Leadership Failure

This week an East Coast high school cancelled its remaining football season. The freshman, sophomore and varsity teams will forfeit  approximately18 combined games. The sport season termination comes during an investigation into alleged hazing and bullying activities within the football program. This administrative decision is a blatant failure of adult leadership in that school district. The program stoppage is an example of cowardly leadership demonstrating a fear to address kids with negative behavior while ignoring the participation enjoyment and entitlement of 'good' kids in the program.

This reminds me of a time while coaching at Jacksonville high school when I went to our administration and asked why we no longer have sports' pep assemblies, which saluted the positive representative efforts of athletes. I was told that the general feeling amongst administrators and teachers believed such assemblies became problematic for faculty attempting to 'deal' with jerks, bums and clowns, which are found in most schools. Thus once again the well behaved 'good' kids were denied support and fun because of disruptive students.
I recall one year when that same high school partnered with a fast food restaurant and gave away sandwich-coupons to documented truant students if they attended school five days consecutively. I knew many 'A' students who were outstanding school citizens and never missed school; they got ZERO...jack shit for their attendance. Check out most public schools and you will discover 90% of rules are implemented because of 3% of the jerk-population.

Gibber-Jabber

My 47" VIZO television, which is supposedly hooked up to Comcast XFINITY high definition was experiencing a blank screen periodically so I telephoned Comcast to set up a 'service appointment.' The lady at the other end of my Comcast telephone call spoke broken English and I labored explaining to her that I WAS NOT going to 'follow her telephone instructions to see if my problem could be resolved by her reading directions from a manual and me doing some technician's job.'  I had to use some East St. Louis street jargon to make my point and obtain a service date.

The Comcast service guy came out yesterday at 8 AM. Nice fella who seemed to be extremely well-versed in cable service technology. I listened to him explain what was wrong with my reception and what I could do should the problem arise in the future. He said, "Your HDM1 cable seems loose...perhaps you need a new cable or then maybe the HDM1  port in the TV has an issue." He continued, "Some devices may output a 1080/24p or 1080/30p video signal, but some TV's can only accept a 1080/60p video signal. Connecting the device may resolve the issue."

I found myself 'cocking' my head like my poodle, Yodie when the dog is trying to hear a key word like, treat, bye bye cars, and outside. Nothing helped me understand what the hell the service fella was saying. I said, "Can you explain that in simple terms?" He said sure and offered this: "Try using a different HDM1 cable. If possible, try a different device using the same connection. Hit the power reset button. If no picture comes on the television turn every thing off and allow every device to be without support-power for 30 seconds and repeat procedures."
Not once did I hear that sum bitch say anything about the rabbit ears or aluminum foil!

Kilroy Was Here

It is somewhat funny but yet poignant that the walls in peoples' homes often give off great clues regarding the life lived and hobbies embraced. When entering some homes, I notice animal heads mounted on walls, family photos and oft times awards and or commendation recognitions.  I suppose we all attempt to make sure people know that we did 'something' in our lives that was notable for a brief moment-in-time. Perhaps we also wish to have those extrinsic reminders 'out there' in view realizing that memory lapse is lurking around the next bowl of oatmeal.

In recent weeks, I have taken down several 'wall-items' with intentions to give away these once perceived keepsake reminders. I am aware of some stuff that my three kids might wish to have and a few former basketball players have made it known to me that they would like to receive certain items.
All these 'things' will one day become discarded items...I'm just passing that decision on down-the-line. As the old gospel song says, ...'till my trophies at last I lay down.'

Some Stuff Sucks

I don't care for some circumstances. I find myself attending weddings of my nieces and nephews' kids because their parents attended my kids' weddings. That's not right. I think MY kids are on the hook to attend these weddings; it's their 'payback.' I never get any mail worth reading. Along with regular invoice-bills, I now have over one thousand return-labels from cystic fibrosis, March of Dimes, Heart and Cancer organizations and Alzheimer's International. Recently, I get mailings from senior living-homes, hearing aid businesses and  funeral homes with an occasional Casino post card telling me that they 'miss' my money and I have a free room; it's not stated that I should bring some more money but it is understood.
I also receive annual notices from the Masons, Scottish Rites and Temple that my dues are needed. I pay the dues and support many of those organizations' causes but I never attend any meetings. Those meetings are too much like the Cub Scouts and I never could get into secret pass words and merit badges.
I did buy some hearing aides and discovered what I suspected; there's not much worth hearing, especially today's pop songs, which really suck!

Everybody's Gotta Be Some Place

I thought it important to share with our three grown children what their parents are 'thinking' about down the road. We are not in denial; we know the day may arrive when we must make 'other' living arrangements. I explained to the children that their mother is straight forward with her game plan, she wishes to live in one of those assisted-living places or a nursing home. I DO NOT. Whereas, I am not above those living accommodations and I am sure that I can get use to 'strange odors' and institutional cooking; I am not going to live any place where 'keepers' tell me it's time to do crafts or I must play bingo.
Therefore, I have told my children that when I can no longer paddle solo, I intend to live with ONE of THEM. I am confident this news creates great excitement amongst my kids as they anticipate winning the lottery. Meanwhile, I just bide-my-time and allow the kids to placate the old man as they 'jockey' for inside position.

Happy Days Ahead

Recently, I read a study about corruption.  'Has society become more corrupt?' It appears the study findings reveal a resounding YES. General population corruption is 'up' 50% while corporate corruption is 'up' 80%. The study offered no government corruption numbers...probably best.  I am not surprised by the study findings regarding corruption; I'm waiting for the study that gives insight to apathy because no one seems to give-a-crap about corruption in the first place.  Most folks bitch about corruption but appear to accept it as matter-of-fact.
Another study I came across gave me more hope for life. This study finds that the older we 'get' the 'happier' we become. Once a person reaches age 65, they begin to enjoy life more fully. The study concludes that happiness increases with each five-year increment. Come to think of it, at seventy-five, I notice myself a tad bit giddier and at this rate by the time I hit 95, I'll be a dad gum incoherent, laughing goof ball.

Advice That Still Floats

I grew up subjected to the 'KISS' philosophy. (Keep It Simple Stupid) That's right, my adult family members gave simple and direct advice. Nothing was left to interpretation and for damn sure nothing was left for negotiation.
My maternal grandmother, Mammy Bennett always reminded me, during those teen years; "Jesus is coming a second time, so don't be doing anything shameful should HE come back tonight." That kept the lid on some potential crazy-ass behavior.
My mother was always reminding me; "You must respect a girl you date." "If you don't respect the girl you disrespect yourself, your family and our God." My father was even more practical with his reminder; "Hey boy, when you're out on the streets tonight don't let your mouth overload your ass and BE HOME BEFORE midnight!"

God Bless Those Who Follow Us

The late legendary humorist, Will Rogers once said, "The only thing I know is what I read in the newspaper." Rogers would likely not subscribe to a newspaper THESE days. Yesterday morning, I digested the following stories in my local paper:

Parents of an African-American teenager, who was shot and killed by a police officer want answers NOW.
Public schools seek constitutionally guaranteed monies from the State to fund education in their districts.
Health experts fear Ebola threatens the world.
Air flights at Chicago's Midway Airport are cancelled due the arson fire at the control tower.
United States bombing air strikes hit ISIS terrorist groups while political debates over the issue falls along predictable 'Party Lines.'
Survivalist wacko ambushes and kills a State Trooper. Teacher sentenced in student rape case.
Drought and fires continue in the Far West. Bomb scare causes evacuation of Florida school.
Politicians up the 'nasty' accusations targeting opponents in 90% of commercial ads...while 3% of ad time is devoted to solutions talk.
An Oklahoma City man, fired from his job, returns to the work place and beheads a young female co-worker.
Polio and 'pot sales' are on the rise in Colorado.
NFL star running back strikes girlfriend with his fist knocking her out.
NFL Star runner in limelight, not for his running skills, but leaving physical abuse marks on his young son.
Investigation continues in clergy pedophile case.
NBA star endorses his 12th tennis shoe brand and style, which will retail for $200.00.

I'm going to stop here and pray for my grandkids' future and the young inner city Black boy who contemplates a bad decision in an effort to get those damn tennis shoes.

It's a Matter of Choice !

I really think that too many people die spiritually long before they die physically. Personally, as I grow older, I note that 'self-pity' wishes more of my thinking-time. However, I am convinced that I don't need youth, money or fame to live majestically. I must simply wake up each day and accomplish three objectives: (1) Share an experience that will become a good recall-memory days ahead, (2) Laugh aloud; at something, someone or myself and (3) Make another person feel special before the day ends.
While You Live; Live Gloriously

Believe as Ye May

Rarely will one of those Internet 'pop ups' catch my eye and cause me to investigate. Yesterday, I found myself following up. The headline: 15 Celebrities Who Don't Believe in God.
Some findings did not surprise me because of previous information through interviews. Of course, all names came from the entertainment world rather than the sports' arena, although the propensity to physically abuse children and women found in the NFL suggests at least some 'ungodly' behavior.
Instead of listing names, which does not appeal to my needs, I offer a common comment shared by these celebrity non-believers.
Many of them stated that 'religion,' in and of itself, is a man made notion. Whereas I welcome a debate, argument and even a fight over politics, I have no desire to debate the notion of God or religion with anyone; God and Satan only knows that their is enough fighting and wars over religion already 'on-the-books.'
I will however, say to the atheist/agnostics who 'think' religion is a man made thing, 'we should ' invent more such 'stuff.'.
On a personal note: Although it was likely politically correct casting Morgan Freeman to play 'God' in the film, 'Bruce Almighty,' Morgan Freeman is NO George Burns!

Own It and Become Better From It

There she was, big as life. making her self-proclaimed 'come-back.' That Georgia drawl was as deep and syrupy as ever as Paula Deen attempted to explain once again how she thinks. Paula Deen is an American success story. A person who came from little wherewithal to become a 'celebrity chef' and develop a multimillion dollar enterprise. Today she operates 'Lady and Sons' restaurants

You recall a year ago, Deen got her 'tit-in-the-ringer' (as said in my old neighborhood) when she admitted using the 'N' word. Okay already! John 8:7...'He without sin among you cast the first stone.' I defy any adult who claims they have never USED a racial slang or terms.

I am not defending my shortfalls nor those of Paula Deen's. I would just like to have Deen get-over herself and move on>>make some lasagna. The more she talks the more she sounds like Flip Wilson's character, 'Geraldine;' "The Devil made me do THAT!"

Phantom Fella

The past two weeks, my wife has been cleaning out the closets and throwing away much unused and outdated clothing along with other miscellaneous items. I have transported five large filled storage containers to Grace United Methodist 'Economy Shop.'

My wife showed me a photo of a rather large-robust smiling young fellow, which she found in the back of a closet. In matter-of-fact tones, she asked me, "Who is this?" I said, "I have no idea." Later, I put the photo in a trash bag only to notice it was back upstairs in the hallway the next day. When I asked my wife why she got the picture out of the trash, she said, "Well, I'm not about to throw away a photo of a person we should know; after all it's not the guy's fault."
I'm thinking, sum bitch, neither of us know THE this guy in the photo and sure as hell my wife is going to have me hang that picture in the hallway with forty other photos. If that happens, I am hanging the damn picture with her side of the family.

Lines Are Disgusting !

The iPhone 6 was released last Friday and hundreds of thousands of people across the nation stayed awake many hours and stood in long lines to await the moment they could purchase the newest Apple 'toy.' I heard many reasons offered for the line-waiting and most of the logic seemed rather trivial if not childishly-foolish. I am all for free market products driving our economy but the mentality demonstrated by 'camp-outs' to get iPhones or 'One Direction' concert tickets suggests that a helluva lot of folks need to get a life and obviously, some need to get a job!

The longest line I have ever stood in was one of the men's urinal lines at Wrigley Field. A couple of years back, I was watching my Cardinals play the Cubs at the 'Beautiful Confines,' as the Chicago North Siders prefer to call it, when I had to relieve myself. The actual line to get into a Wrigley Men's restroom was not that long...it was the long-communal-line' where I stood shoulder-to-shoulder alongside dozens of fellas holding their respective 'pee-pees' and staring at a trough holding a collection of various colors of liquid-waste  intermingling and flowing down hill on the long-winding journey to the Chicago River. It was during that moment that I vowed NEVER to wear sandals to Wrigley Field!
I wonder if Cheney, 'The Dick' has ever attended a baseball game at Wrigley?

I'm Glad Our Paths Crossed

The news out of my family physician's mouth was not good; he is leaving Decatur and after fourteen years, my wife and I must find a new Doctor. That's not a fun thought. I understand that some things will stay the same with a new doctor; he'll be a social liberal doing God's work attending to the sick while embracing a fiscal conservative philosophy as he worries about the re-distribution of his money! Funny thing about all of us...we are liberals at heart when it comes to US and OURS but we turncoat-conservative when it is an other's problem. For example: A few years back when Obama offered that 'cash-for-clunkers' deal to stimulate the auto sales, a very Republican-conservative doctor was all over that liberal moment as he 'cash-for-clunker' a new auto for his daughter.(I suppose that was ONE Obama idea the anti-help the middle-class conservative liked). You can take this thought to the bank: When we meet Saint Peter at those 'Golden Gates' if asked why we should be allowed entrance, we will quickly begin listing all our liberal moments and actions. I hope no fool dare shows the 'gate-keeper' his bank account...Matthew 19:24.

See The Love

Many, if not most, Christians fall distinctly on the side of 'anti' on many social issues. Perhaps, in fairness to those folks, I should say that the issues are often perceived as 'moral' questions. Examples: Most Christians would be anti-abortion and anti gay but interestingly not anti-capital punishment.

I believe myself to be a Christian...yes, I am a born-again Christian and yet I refuse to judge the mother who aborts or the sexual orientation of people. (I don't think I have the 'right' to judge those folks with those beliefs or persuasions). Many who claim Christianity would say that I am not a true Christian but I will ignore that judgment and await my God's opinion regarding my soul..
I do find myself big on tolerance.

Last Friday afternoon, my wife asked me to pause for a moment and watch a first grade boy's reaction to his parents announcement that they were going have a baby. Perhaps many blog readers saw that YouTube video. Well, the boy and his mother were guests on Ellen Degeneres' television show. After Ellen's interview of the delightful lad, she said she had a gift for the boy. When the curtain opened, the wife's husband and boy's father appeared for a surprise reunion...the father was on leave from military duty in Afghanistan. Needless to add there was not a dry eye in the audience. My immediate thought?...what a warm expression of our Lord's commandment 'to love one another as I have loved you and do for the least of my people.'
I understand that Ellen is gay however, I have no idea if Ellen is a person of faith. I do know her actions often represent God's love. I suggest that if one must judge...could one factor in the love of which Christ spoke??

I'll Stand Pat

As I entered the sun room, my wife looked away from the television and spoke, "I want to talk to you about dying." My first thought was perhaps I look a tad sickly... then I remember my father's favorite line about his daughter-in law; "Gerry, he'd say, "you are as subtle as a punch in the nose." She continued, "If I die before you, I am worried that you'll become a recluse," she explained.
She then added, you don't have coffee buddies, don't do the hunting, fishing or golf thing. She concluded, "I worry about you being lonely one day." Strange as it may sound, I am comfortable alone. I never gave much thought to the reasons; I know who I am and I am okay with that fella.

Please understand, I enjoy people. However, I am one of those people who can be a bit overbearing. I find myself dominating a conversation at times and I am too free expressing my opinions. Obviously, I must desire doing such but I don't like it in hindsight. Therefore, I am best paddling solo. There's a handful of folks who know me well enough to both ignore and tolerate my short falls. I need not push my luck seeking to increase that number.

'Where's The Beef?'

NFL player, Ray Rice punches his girlfriend with his fist knocking her out; I observe NO OUTRAGE or sit-in demonstrations. The fact is African American women have the highest rate of abusive victimization (35 per 1000) of any racial group.

In 1987, a Los Angeles Dodgers' Vice President makes insensitive racists comments about Blacks suggesting that they did not have the 'necessities' to be 'IN' management positions. Al Campanis was washed out of baseball as the result. A few months later, television football analyst, Jimmy 'The Greek' Snyder is fired for racist's remarks about Black athletes.
The two aforementioned incidents were only hurtful words...a man hitting a woman in the face with his fist would seem far more painful.

Recently, the National Basketball League, under extreme pressure from African-American basketball players turning jerseys inside-out and angry voices around the nation forced 'Clippers' team owner, Donald Sterling to sell his team because of Sterling's racists comments.

On the heels of Ray Rice's abusive behavior, I ask, where the hell is Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton; where is the demonstrations and pressure to protect the vulnerable? As Clara Peller (1984-Wendy's television commercial) said, "WHERE'S THE BEEF?"

Another  spelling for disingenuous...'phony.'

$ Fame Talks; Bullshit Walks

Although there are significant differences and discrepancies between the South African and American Judicial Systems, is it NOT interesting and noteworthy that the two differing court systems can render similar mouth-dropping verdicts;
'Juice,' say hell-o to 'Blade Runner.'

She Can Be Puzzling

I am not a gun owner. My wife recently posed the question when she asked me, "Do you believe we she have a gun in our home for protection?" I said, "I haven't given the matter any thought." Her response, "Well, think about it and if you decide we need one get it." "If you do buy a hand-gun, I have one stipulation," she continued, "keep the bullets downstairs and the gun upstairs so you don't shoot anybody." I'll stop right here.

Be Careful Name-Calling

I never could imagine any grown man physically abusing a woman. I can think of nothing so shamefully disgusting unless it would be the abuse of a defenseless child. I view such men as sick low-life's. There appears to be either an escalation of such relationship-behavior or perhaps a greater frequency in its reporting.
I recently heard a panel discussing the incident of abuse involving NFL players; one debater suggested that too many professional football players were, in his words, "thugs." I thought that was a rather incorrect and cheap statement. I will say that our NCAA system of college admission reeks of ignoring academic standards in pursuit of athletic revenues and thus produces too many questionable personalities representing 'higher-education' but that's another story.
Withholding much statistical mumble-jumble on the abuse subject, let me just leave you with this sobering fact: The law enforcement (occupation) domestic violence is nearly double the average rate. And these folks swear to 'protect' and serve. Be slow to call people of certain occupations 'thugs.'

Dumb & Dumber

This 'blog-post' falls under the category, 'You gotta be shitting me!' ...with apologies to readers who deplore vulgar slang, have no sin or skin blemishes.
It comes to my attention that there is a growing nationwide parental-push to do-away with school homework. Come now, we cannot be one bit surprised. Since Dr. Spock (1946) entered the picture with his permissive parenting ideas, we Americas have seen children move from well-behave and respectful to sassy, contentious and rebellious. Not only has there been a moral nosedive within the family unit there is a continuation of idolizing Junior and Missy's very existence and placating them at every turn.

Today's parenting reality finds mommy and daddy embracing conciliating roles as they attempt to gain goodwill and friendship from their children. Hey, why not take up the cause to 'do away' with homework, which displeases those little self-centered turd-blossoms? However, the next time you note an Asian kid kicking ass at the spelling bee or you notice more and more  Asian physicians, remember as young students, those kids attended schools longer days and more days a year than did American children. The Asian student was encourage to embrace academic competition and expected to face endless homework and memorization.

Make sure your kid plugs in his 'smart-phone' tonight because he'll be texting his ass off all day tomorrow and into the wee hours of the morning. Yes sir, just a few weeks ago there was a study that concluded kids needed more sleep so the suggestion was 'start school latter.' If we combine that with no homework our precious darlings are going to just love us! Dumb and dumber !

The Coin Has Two Sides

I am happy with confidence to place my racial, religious and ethnic contour (examination / comparison) against any measurement offered. That said, I think we would agree that on the heels of every racial conflict or incident in this nation, we hear the same conversation about race-relations and all the possible interwoven and connected debates. I welcome such conversation and debate on the subject of race provided the focus is on improving relations rather than blaming or character attacking of easily identifiable groups.

What I am not interested in is the suggestion about some bogus need for 'Black History' to be taught in public schools. I also do not wish to have Irish history, Hispanic history, Polish history, Italian history or Jewish history taught per se' in our public schools. Don't get me wrong, I believe there is much to be studied about each of the aforementioned groups but I think we need not mandate specific studies, which suggests that 'whitey' does not understand thus he needs to be educated. Fact-of-the-matter everybody is ignorant about 'the other group.' Everybody suffers from ethnocentric tendencies. Tolerance education as it relates to race, ethnic, and religious acceptance is necessary for all peoples.  Let us approach the conversation, debate and any studies accepting the premise we all carry baggage !

'Say Cheese'

The recent 'hacking' of celebrities' nude photos from their private computers jarred my memory of another similar moment. I was a sixteen year old lad working in a St. Louis factory (1955). The factory employed perhaps 20-25 people who worked at skilled and semi-skilled blue-collar jobs. These folks were not college educated but they were for the most part good family people and patriotic Americans trying to keep the wolf from the front door.

One particular co-working fella, I will call 'MT,' was a amateur photography-geek who liked to photograph himself in the nude. He obviously had one of those time-delayed cameras that permitted him to set the shutter-release and jump into bed with his nude lady-friend and assume various fornicating positions.  'MT' would bring nude photos to work and enjoyed sharing the pictures with all the guys. One interesting observation; in every photo, 'MT' was looking directly into the camera lens and smiling.

I often thought, 'What a weird ass, sick pervert!' Fast forward from 1955-to-2014, I am amazed at the perverted narcissism, which is apparently common among many highly regarded celebrities and entertainers.
"Oh, no-one knows what goes on behind closed doors."...Charlie Rich
Perhaps there is a potential money-making market in 'Entertainers' Nude Trading Cards' I.e., baseball card-shows.

Reflections

I suppose every man nearing life's end seeks a personal mental solace, which validates a purposeful journey. Perhaps many men take liberties identifying with Frank Sinatra's song, "My Way" because it suggests that a man must beat-back perilous struggles to succeed. I am sure most men justify making the aforementioned case with conditional concessions to reality measured against one's perception. Regardless of one's thesis or a counter-argument, we all listen to that inner spiritual voice that says, "Well done; you did good."
One certain factor is the ability for every person to evaluate and draw conclusions about our neighbor's life rather than self-scrutiny.
I believe our Lord saw this inherent weakness. Did He not speak with clarity of the speck in one's eye versus the speck in others' eyes?

Sometimes Winning IS Everything

I was always amused by basketball 'people' (coaches & fans) who would suggest that a coach is either a 'defensive-coach' or 'offensive-coach.' Consider please, a coach can play a very deliberate offensive style and the final 'low' score perhaps would suggest he is a defensive coach; ain't necessarily so.  My first head-coaching job was at Mason City (Illinois), which is now a consolidated school called Illini Central. I followed a coach into that position who was a deliberate offensive and good defensive coach. I recall once my second year when my Mason City team beat an opponent 114-to-89. Many local fans thought I was not teaching defense because they were accustom to their Mason City teams winning 50-to-25; a similar point-difference but low scoring thus suggesting 'defense.'

I remember the late, Joe Lucco (Edwardsville high school coach) who once told me that he believed a good defense started with a great offense. Joe's theory was 'put up' twice as many shots as your opponent and you'll win.' I personally believe that since high school coaches cannot (legally) recruit players it behooves the coach to determine, in the preseason, the strengths and weaknesses of his players and then orchestrate offensive and defensive approaches that give the kids a chance to win. As they say, 'accentuate the positive (strengths) and eliminate the negative' (weaknesses). That said...don't call me a defensive or offensive coach; most fans didn't, they called me other things!

PS. On another matter, I recently said in a blog that Harry .S Truman was second only to Abe Lincoln when listing our best Presidents. Obama  needs to take a page from Harry's 'playbook' and drop the 'Big One' everywhere we know ISIS terrorists are active. Again, sometimes the best defense is a good offense!

Speak For Self Not For Jesus

Can we agree that both the Christian 'Right' and Christian 'Left' believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior; they differ in what they believe Jesus wishes from us and for us. The Christian 'Right' embraces the gospel of prosperity, which suggests that if you are a sinless believer you will be rewarded with material things. The 'Right-wing Christian' infers that the poor are lazy and sinful.

The 'Left-wing Christian' believes that the poor is poor because they are not valued except for cheap labor. The 'Left' asks for social justice through wages that allow for provisions of body and spirit. A plethora of issues put the two Christian viewpoints at odds. The 'Conservative Right' will become motivated to fight abortion, stem cell research (using embryos), availability of contraceptives through health care plans as well as the very affordable health care plans designed to benefit the poor. The 'Liberal Left' will  call for a woman's choice, protection of the poor and wage fairness. 'Right-wing Christians will state the former is sinful and the latter is redistribution of wealth.

Believers thus face a choice between 'Conservative Right-wing thinking' Christians and 'Liberal Left-wing thinking' Christians. Ultimately, we seek to answer the question: 'What would Jesus do?' I can MAKE that decision (choice) without assistance from others; hope you can, also.

Some Win, Some Lose; Some Remain The Same

I often wonder, which of the following sad circumstances will end first: (1) prejudice / racism, (2) the Middle East conflicts or (3) the Chicago Cubs' World Series drought.  I am convinced that it will take three more generations to die-off before we bury prejudice attitudes and discrimination. As for the Middle East conflict, it appears much as the Ten Commandments; written in stone; those folks ain't ever going to stop fighting! The good news seems to be coming to the North side of Chicago. I believe those young Cubbies' fans entering college this year will celebrate a Cubs' World Series winner before they graduate from the higher institution of learning. In the meantime, they'll continue practicing celebratory-drunkenness for all kinds of reasons!

No Strategy / Bad Wardrobe

I would not claim to be some type of 'Presidential Historian;' like most Americans with limited in-depth knowledge, I have my favorite Presidents. Those Commander-in-Chiefs are Abraham Lincoln, Harry S. Truman and George Washington. The listing order is intended and significant.
We (countrymen and women) have always been critical of our leaders; I liken it to my critical eye on St. Louis Cardinals' managers.

The other day, I caught a portion of President Obama's press conference as he spoke briefly to the nation about the economy numbers, which seem improved and the mess confronting the world by the activities of the terrorist group ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria).
The President stated at one point that he would be engaging Congress regarding the desired direction after the Pentagon weighs in with more information but at the moment there IS NO firm strategy. Holy cow-crap, the right-wing group went off on the President who would dare suggest WE OMNIPOTENT Americans don't have a game plan. Shit-fire-and-save-matches cowboys, we should just bomb the bastards and hoist a flag stating: "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED." Oops, scratch that idea that's what put us in this shit hole!

Another thing Mr. President what's up wearing a beige suit during the press conference. Ronald Reagan NEVER wore a tan suit representing our country.
